Yeah I can't remember phone numbers to save my life. However the argument that something is being lost if kids learn how to do math (we will use math for this discussion but other subjects can and do apply) on the new gear and not teaching them the older methods is kinda silly. In todays day and age there is hardly a person in a Western country who can't in a moments notice get their hands on some form of calculator, which means even if they did know the harder method of doing it in their heads or on their hands they would more than likely just do it on the calculator.

You wouldn't expect schools to make kids read Chaucer in its orginal form, Middle English is very different from Modern English, you would be happy for them to learn the same thing using a translated copy of the book. If the end result is the children have learnt what they needed to learn then it doesn't really matter what method they are using.

It is always fun to look back and remember things with the rose tinted glasses of nostalgia (hey why else are we on this site) but sometimes we need to stop and think "If I had a graphics calculator at school what would I have done?".

I was remembering my days back in school when shop class was one of the requirements. Metal shop, wood shop and printing. I thinnk the intent was to interest people in some of the "trades" as far as a choice of a particular field of interest for a future employment avenue of interest.

I really wish I had all of the time back that I spent setting up individual letters in the little holders in order to print something on a printing press. Maybe the lesson learned is that I appreciate being able to click on "print" and have it all done for me in a matter of seconds. That is, of course, if I can afford to replace the ink cartridges which have already exceeded the cost of the printer.

I know, whine, cry, moan... I'll stop.

Nah man it's cool to think back about it, but kids today learn what they need to.

I had to do Wood class in year 8 (I was 13) metal work was for people in year 10 and up due to the extra dangers and wielding and stuff.

Along the same line as re-making videos, I found there are tons of formulaic math tips and tricks on YouTube. I guess I never thought to look before "sharing" what I had experienced in the past.

DISCLAIMER: I have no knowledge or experience with the following topic.

As far as trivia goes, the term "the nines" was used as a reference by LSD users to describe the physical side effects of taking the drug (cramps, nausea, apprehension, etc.). This was supposedly attributed to the use of strychnine as either a residual by-product or an element in the drug's production. Strychnine=nine="the nines".

This is a common urban misconception aka myth. Strychnine is not involved in any way, shape or form.
Kind of a far cry from the rudimentary skills of single digit multiplication tricks, wouldn't you say?
?
