No, I still haven't found it. Unfortunately I have read supertrini's last reply too late, since the link he posted isn't working anymore (demu.org is currently down) - I have contacted the site owner to ask him whether he knows this game, since I'm pretty sure he has played lots of obscure DOS shareware games (at least judging by the number of games that were indexed in his site).

I'm relieved to see that someone else remembers this game, though, since it means I'm not imagining things

No idea whether anyone still cares, but I *think* I've found the game the op is referring to in of those shareware CDs that were so common in mid-to-late 90s.

Anyway, the game is called "Heavy Combat" and it totally matches the description. As one of the previous user said, the registration code can be found by examining the .exe with an hex editor
