Probably a fake. A gas/oil spring used in an office chair would never have the pressure which is neccessary to cause damage like that. Especially if it was built in China, such springs are much too expensive for a low cost chinese product.

Well, for one thing, the article does explain a difference in safety between gas cylinders and oil, and it doesn't say the chair was cheap to buy, only that it's "poorly manufactured". Poorly manufactured stuff tend to be cheap. On the other hand, modern fighter planes costing millions of dollars each do crach from time to time too.

Not saying the accident did happen, only that there is nothing in the article itself that indicates it being a fake story. Could be fake, and I do hope it is.

These cylinders are usually gas/oil - type. In principle, they are working with gas and oil in two separated chambers.

I have been working for office furniture industry for more than four years. To my experience, this is techincally not possible.

Ok, I have been working in the furniture industry for exactly zero years, so you probably have a bit more knowledge there
