If you don't read the books you miss out on a lot of lore. But tbh I didn't read all of them either, only the interesting ones.

That's funny that you say you don't like Morrowind because there wasn't enough action and too much story -- I think the opposite. Morrowind's story was deep if you took the time to dig into it, but like I said before it was barely integrated into the gameplay. You could just run around and kill things and never know anything about the story of the game, and I didn't like that. None of the NPCs were very interesting and your own character really had no personality, so regardless of how well or poorly written the story was, it was a very minor part of the game. It was like they threw it in there because RPGs need some sort of story, but they wanted to make sure it wasn't anything like reading a book or watching a movie where the story is the main focus.

I also hated the environments.......not that they were bad graphics though. That's just purely a matter of taste; I think the environments from Elder Scrolls IV look great.

I have began playing BG, and i must say that i don't see what all the fuss is about. Many people said it's the best RPG ever made. Before i came into possesion, i found out it was made by Bioware(the guys who made NWN, my favorite RPG).So my hopes were pretty high. But i was soon disappointed by it's dull gameplay.Anyway i didn't get far(right after Gorion is killed). So i hope the game becomes more active afterwards. So after this i tried BG 2.Although i only entered the first room(where you are caged), i could tell that this game is not so boring(at least at the begining). After i play these two games, i'm going to go for Ice wind dale and planescapetorment.I have heard many good things about the latter, so again, my hopes are pretty high.

I voted Morrowind. Since it looks kick-behind, makes you want to explore the world and you are (almost) totally in control of what you do. Also searching for special quests is pretty cool.

Though I think the rpg that impressed me most was Final Fantasy 6

The music, the art, everything was great! especially for a SNES game.

Baldurs Gate is very average to play through these days.
Don't give up on number 2. It starts boring but its really fantastic, the addon is just... WOW.

Icewind Dale is very combat orientated and Planescape Torment is VERY good

Well this depends, If you're hack n slash kinda guy than bg2 and icewindale are good games for you, because you can get ultra-mega-ubercool high level characters with items coming out frome every hole(I mean really you can find a +1 sword in a barrel in the local pub )
I like BG because it had a great story and you don't have that feeling of being too powerful, it's kinda fun when you have to be carefull and you can't do anything you want, it's much more how would I say realistic.Still playing BG2 was fun.

Now my opinion on NWN is:
It's a catastrophe the game's got this stupid story and you're this special hero from the beggining and you have to save the town etc. I like it when I am unknown it's much more fun playing a thief then. The graphics are stupid , yeah it's 3d SO WHAT?And I guess I dislike 3rd edition dnd rules so that's a factor too, the game is really industrial , made just to squeeze money from consumers because it h has "mega-cool" graphics and monsters. This game doesn't have that something that a real RPG should have it's too linear.

I partially agree with that, Neverwinter Nights got not bad graphics sometimes (like the graphics of the Iron Golem or the Balor - they're just fantastic compared to Baldurs' Gate II), but the story and gameplay is very dull. Though I didn't play the three addons yet, and I'm not sure if I will anyway yet. But people say the addons are much better than the original campaign.

The Second Addon for NWN is much more epic story telling, think BG. Honestly up there with BGII:TOB

The first story was really not up to Bioware standard, but I feel they covered it with excellent multiplayer.
