Are you playing them in DosBox? Is your computer a notebook or a tower?
To first - if you play them in Windows XP, try DosBox instead, then you have sound, too. To second - laptop screens might have problems with different resolutions than their "native" one.

Open Dosbox.conf.
Go to where it says "fullresolution=original" and change it to "fullresolution=1024x768".
Then go to where it says "output=surface" and change it to "output=ddraw".
This should help a bit.

"out of range" is in monitor refresh rate. but i dont know where can you set it in dosbox configs
so go to monitor settings (right click desktop, properties, settings, advanced, monitor) and set lower refresh rate.. but i guess that even windows wouldnt work.
..so if it wont help (which probably wont) just reinstal direct x, it helps me when i get out of range errors on applications (never got on dosbox though). or you can "override" refresh rate (start, run, dxdiag, more help, override) and set 60 or 75, i dont know which one dosbox uses so just try=)
