I agree Plix. If you're running on a low-specs machine and want to squeeze every inch of performance out of program compiling with several optimization options can get you some effect, but it requires in-depth knowledge. To just try out and fiddle with Linux (in this case Ubuntu) you're much better off with the packaging tool!
