Well, just because a book is widely popular doesn't mean it's automatically a bad book. Dan Brown's books are bad.

You speak as if though you're counting them as a whole, I admit that a large portion of his books are not as good as they should be, but there are a few jewels among the stones.

I agree, his books aren't that bad. I've read worse... like "la vie devant soi"

Eh, the worst I've ever read was Starcraft Liberty's Crusade.

Me and my friend took the book and burned it, we keep half the book and the other charred remains as a memory to the fun we had burning that atrocious book.

Every sentence was a hideous blur of similes and metaphors that made you cringe. The storyline was ripped from the game by adding some two dimensional character that had the personality of a pungent diseased pig. They made Jim Raynor sound like a hick Redneck cop for god's sake. It defiled Starcraft then spat on the remains.

No, I expected something that would be decent and readable.

It didn't even fit in with my Starcraft Action Figures *sob*.

I concur to the fullest. Some things which are reviewed well are actually good.

However, I hate when people praise certain creative endeavors just because someone else does. It is all hype, and they are mostly crap, and yet no one seems to want to say so for fear that they'll be seen as ignorant for not "getting it."

Which of course only perpetuates the circulation of the crap (such as Dan Brown) into wider distribution.

Bleh!!

I suppose it's even worse when you're expecting something to be good because of reviews, and it turns out to be tripe. If you're in a crappy book mood, and pick up a crappy book, it's not nearly so disappointing. It's only when you expect better that you get so annoyed.

Although I wouldn't say he has written the most touching works I have ever read (believe me, if it's touching, I probably won't like it), but Kurt Vonnegut has written some of the best books I have read to date.* I recommend "Breakfast of Champions" and "Cat's Cradle."
Oh! Oh! Kurt Vonnegut is damn good. When I finished Cat's Cradle, I had to start over again because I didn't want it to end yet. That, and Slaughterhouse 5 are my favourites from him, Breakfast of Champions I haven't had the time to read yet, but will surely do so in the near future.
