I downloaded the game and its worked FINE up until now. I shoot down ufo nr 42, and when the mission is supposed to start, the thing crashes.

I have now tired reloading old games and always have the same problem beginning at around ufos nr. 40-46.. I even tried taking it all from the beginning, but the same thing happens..

I'm running it on winXP btw.

I don't seem to have this problem.
There might be corrupt files or something scattered around the game folder.

This probably won't help you, but I suggest you delete the current folder (copy the one with your saves) then download a fresh copy of the game and extract it.
If that doesn't work, the next problem might be corrupted save games.
Either that or there's some other problem that's conflicting with your PC.

When it crashes, does it go to a black screen? Or quit to the desktop?

Try the above, and if it doesn't work, there are some gurus here that can most likely solve your problem.

EDIT: There seems to be another person with the same problem, check out this thread.

Never begin a mission when one ore more other interceptors are still chasing an UFO as a minimized icon. This will always lead to a crash.

There is several other similar "bugs" in this game, but I can't seem to remember them right now. You should definitly check the one I mentionned tough. If you overwritted your tactical data over your geoscape data while doing so, you might just need to start over again from scratch...

The best way to avoid this is to have several save spots for each game. I'd recommend at least 4; 2 for geoscape and 2 for tactical.

I use 2 for geoscape and all the rest for tactical saving each turn under different save slot. once i fill them i start labeling them. example: mission save 1, mission save 2,...., mission save 15...
i also use one slot for saving within turn. example i just made an incredible shot and killed an alien standing far away. i save under file named temp. :-)

Anyway as far as your crash goes if game continues to crash perhaps you should post the save file (ie folder). that way someone might check if the file is corrupt and maybe even where the problem is.
