Yeah, the story in Homeworld: Cataclysm is kind of weak. But it's a great game nonetheless.

I tried to get my hands on Homeworld and Homeworld 2 for a long time now. Nothing seem to work out on this end.

Sci-fi or fantasy strategy games are OK, but they really shine when made with historical flavor.
Seeing that you like Total War series, are you into military stuff?
I used to be a big aviation fan, started with flight simulators on PC, ended up meeting test pilots in real life

As for military games, I liked Squad Assault and the Combat Mission series. I've also been into Hearts of Iron 3 and the Men of War games. I don't really do flight sims much, although I loved IL-Sturmovik 1945/46.
