I'm currently replaying the EGA version of LOOM with its' MIDI Swan lake soundtrack. This game is pure art in my opinion, the puzzle design is quite original, the story is an interesting fairy tale about a special boy belonging to the guild of weavers. And lastly, to me this game doesn't feel dated even though it's not even in VGA! In short, this is one of the few games I've played that I consider pure art.

Other games I can think of that has the same "artsy" feeling to them is Myst (not one "logic puzzle" in the entire game, everything is about observing and listening.) and Homeworld (the concept design and music in this game is incredible, just look at how the created the garden of Kadesh!).

I agree!

But I have to say that there is another so artistic game:

Well, how about Beneath a steel sky? Or even Ascendancy.

I agree there are some games that are of very high quality, at least audio/visualy.

Mmm, artistic doesn't nescessarily mean good looking, or nice sounding.
Right now, Half-Life looks like crap, but that game was artistic, it didn't seem like someone took a level editor, then pieced all these areas together, you felt like you were in a science facility, that kind of feeling is artistic, managing to make a area look like a picture that you're walking through, going through events and such so smoothly they all just seem like normal incidents.

Other games that fit in this category could be Shadow Of The Colossus, Soul Reaver, Morrowind, Thief, and etc.
Older games aren't really quite that artistic, mostly because they didn't have the means to produce such appealing and fantastic worlds and pictures. As mentioned before, many do manage to do that, like Loom, or Monkey Island.

Shadow of the Colossus, definetly. Ico as well. I spent hours just wandering the countryside and looking at the vistas in Colossus.

Well I'm mainly not talking about the graphics. Sure it's important, but to me it cannot create an "artsy" game in itself. To me BASS, Monkey Island and Ascendancy are all great games, but they don't feel like art. For example Revelation (Myst IV) is superior to Myst in many ways (it's my all time favorite game by the way), but it's nowhere near as "artsy". I feel the same about Monkey Island. It's superior to LOOM as a game, but LOOM feels more like something I'd like to put in a frame. oooooooh my head is starting to spin from all of this

Am I making any sense?

Colossus isn't just artistic aesthetically, I mean, even visually it's not nearly as good as some other recent games. But, the whole thing just bleeds a feeling of a ruined paradise and desolation. It's actually eerie to play, an entire huge world completely devoid of people, no music to speak of, or anything, just ruined cities and magestic landscapes. And the whole language is just beautiful, really draws you in, makes you feel like you are indeed somewhere else, somewhere very surreal and out there.

I already said that all Mdag, no need for you to explain it again. k:

And Shadow as Midget said, is more than just "visually" appealing, in fact, it's got somewhat choppy graphics.

I found the Metroid Prime titles on the GCN (the first one, and particularly Echoes) had some brilliant atmosphere, some really well-realised environments with plenty of history. Good graphics too. The opening sequence of Half-Life 2 is great too, with a great sense of oppression about City 17. The loading messages start interrupting the suspension of disbelief too often after that though, which was a real shame.

I'd say Morrowind is pretty artistic...
