Hi guys.

I have been confused for the longest time about the Xcom/UFO series, i first found UFO: Enemy Unknown in the local library here, took it home and had no idea what i was doing. I found it again a few years later on here. I love that game, and spent countless hours playing it. Never finished it though.

This topic is about the newer versions and how they compare to the original, i know i cant really call them newer versions because they are obviously different games, but still the same concept.

When i heard about UFO Aftershock, i thought HOLY muck this will be epic! But alas, i was very disappointed, i loved some elements, like manufacturing present day weapons, fighting an alien loving cult and the massive variety of classes and skills available to troops. I really enjoyed picking people to be certain classes and training them up to do specific jobs in the squad. But what really let me down was level design and loading times, repetitive (and random) unit voices, its hard to "get to know" your troops when every mission they have a different voice.

Then i tried out UFO Aftermath, and it was obviously from the same company that made Aftershock (being the game made before Aftershock). It had some better voice acting, generally i thought it was better than Aftershock, but very difficult.

I played the other Xcom games, the ones in the city, i didnt like them much at all, because they were so different to UFO: Enemy Unknown.

There is also a new UFO game out atm, it seems very cartoonish, so i dont think ill get it. I feel like Cenega destroyed UFO for me, they took Microprose's awesome game and turned it into something horrible.

So, what do you guys think of the new UFO games, and how do they compare to UFO: Enemy Unknown?

Apocalypse (the third in the original X-Com series) had been a major improvement upon the first two games.
I'm not a big fan of restricting the gameplay to Mega-Primus, though.

Now, if someone made remakes of Enemy Unknown and Terror from the Deep using the engine and most gameplay principles of Apocalypse...
Least to say, that would be an ultimate embodiment of the X-Com concept.

I didn't play Cenega's UFO series, and I doubt I will (Starforce :not_ok.

The truth is that the series got ruined for the thinking that it should be based in graphics or in make-up elements like this, when its triumph is, in fact, the very core of the game. The ideas and they way they work. If they wanted to improve it, they should keep that intact. Then, and only then, the new versions would make a good job.

Anyone can stick an UFO: in front of their title, doesn't mean it's a sequel. That's why the sequels went with "X-com", not UFO: in their title -> copyright. This new titles are just trying to cash in on the UFO:Enemy unknown fame.

I personally would like to play x-com remake where you would fight both under water and on land. And keep the old turn-based combat and put some restriction on scientific development.

According to me, there are no competitors against the unforgettable Microsoprose's series. I played all the latest productions, Extraterriestrial too and sincerely I back quickly to my X-Com

Now the game developers and designers of new companies are using the name but about the contents... there's a long and steeped path ahead.
