Well as far as i remeber the torches dont burn over time but over movments between rooms, id say you can change room 15 times or so per torch. But thats the NES ver, dunno about the Win. ver.

Go for the NES version. Not only does it include decent sound, the music is absolutely stunning. One of the best game soundtracks of all time IMO. Not only are the songs good, but they really help bring an atmosphere and mood to the game and draw you in.

Greetings, that's my first post here.
I've just started playing Shadowgate but I've a feeling that in the beginning
the torch goes out too quickly, I can open the door in the first hallway only if
I'm really quick. I got virtually no time to examine anything on my way. Is that
the way it was meant to be played, or should I probably turn to slowing down
the machine? What matters for me is how it was originally meant to be played.
Does any of you who played it long ago remember?
The First torch you have seems to go out faster, after that it is based on how many actions you do. when the game says "The torch begins to flicker..." Change it, and change it quick

did you run the game with dosbox, when the run is working in Windows, you maybe have some bugs, or in the proprities of the game did you have the option to save in the disc?

You operate the lit torch on the unlit one, just the way you would in the real world.

Just a note... I haven't tried using DosBox yet, but when I tried just plain ol' XP, I got the message:

Insert Game Disk 2.
Press Any Key When Ready.

:wallbash:

Just so you know, and can take the XP off the compatibility list.

Unless I'm not doing something right...?

If the XP compatibility box is there, someone has been able to play the game in XP. It is possible that one of the files in the game directory needs to contain the path to the game's location - look for it.

I remember playing this game on the NES, so I remember that at certain points you have to cast spells. I can't figure out how to do that, though. I can push "Speak", the computer asks me what I would like to say, but when I try to enter anything, the game freezes.

:wallbash:

Playing in DOSBox 7.2 with all the default settings.
