Talking Win ME boot problem with yoga

Hi, there,

Starving to play the best RPG and others games I started rapid improvement of my hardware.
Starting from rating 1.0 I am reaching 5.6 from 7 possible now..
We are speaking about Win 7 Ultimate 32-bit OS.
And multi-OS's. I have also Win Me and Win XP at the same machine.
Nice.
But the problem waits me just around the corner.
During the last improvement big fail occurred: I decided to up my RAM from 2 to 3 GB.
OK. The officer believed me and gave me the RAM chip of 1 GB to install on the MB.
I returned home, opened my Desk-top machine and very carefully, following instruction pressed the chip into the relevant slot on MB.
Voila!!!
I saw a terrible smoke on that area.
My MB was kaput!!!!
(I swear then than in the future will never change the RAM alone but in the office of the company!!)
...Back to officer and for 15 Euros he replaced my MB with new one..
But...returning back home I realized that my both OS (ME and XP) are vanished.
No Save mode helped, nothing..
ME is very important for me because my old Scanner – PhotoMaker 3E is supported by ME driver base only.
Well, as You probably know that is impossible to install older OS version on Win 7 (to be fair this act is possible but one will be victim of so many problems, that is better to ignore it), I decided to try Virtual machine to install so needed ME and maybe after XP.
The Internet wizards warned me that to do this I will need boot-able diskette of ME. Sadly, I lost my original Boot diskette of ME and was forced to visit the site www.allbootdisks.com to download the file Windows98_SE.exe. (about 873 Kb).
(SE = Second edition, there are no significant differences between SE and ME.)
Then I inserted an empty diskette to my floppy A and extract the file in 30 files which have to form the boot-able diskette.
Then I switched on my PC, then I pressed button F12, entered BIOS, pressed Floppy A as First boot device.
Sadly, PC does not liked and recognized that diskette as boot-able.
So I do not boot ME now, which is fatal for my installment of Win Me.

HELP!!

Where is my fail?

As You see I am not so stupid novice in these fields.

List of my “boot” diskette files;
  1. ASPI2DOS.SYS 35 KB
  2. ASPI4DOS.SYS 15 KB
  3. ASPI8DOS.SYS 37 KB
  4. ASPI8U2.SYS 40 KB
  5. ASPI8CD.SYS 29 KB

  7. BTCDROM.SYS 22 KB
  8. BTDOSM.SYS 31 KB
  9. CHKDSK.EXE 28 KB
  10. DEBUG.EXE 21 KB
  11. DIR (FILE) 266 KB ?
  12. DRVSPACE.BIN 68 KB
  13. EDIT.COM 69 KB
  14. EXT.COM 13 KB
  15. EXTRACT.EXE 92 KB
  16. FDISK.EXE 63 KB
  17. FINDRAMD.EXE 7 KB
  18. FLASHPT.SYS 63 KB
  19. FORMAT.COM 49 KB
  20. HELP.BAT 1 KB
  21. HIMEM.SYS 33 KB
  22. MSCDEX.EXE 25 KB
  23. OAKCDROM.SYS 41 KB
  24. RAMDRIVE.SYS 13 KB
  25. README.TXT 15 KB
  26. RESTART.COM 1 KB
  27. SCANDISK.EXE 141 KB
  28. SCANDISK.INI 8 KB
  29. SETRAMD.BAT 2 KB
  30. SYS.COM 19 KB

Total: 30 files, about 1.22 MB.

OK?

Pls, excuse me for this long note but my experience in Inet shows that men want more and more details and info to help really.

THANK YOU FOR YR TIME AND HELP!!

http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm/Win
Take
Windows Me OEM
or
Windows Me Custom, No Ramdrive

Insert floppy and:
WRITE the floppy by running the EXE, do NOT, NEVER extract files.
Floppy will be bootable and ready to use for WinME install procedure.
You will even be able to use the floppy to install WinME in VPC2007 (...And that is what you should do if you're smart).

BTW: for your information, ALL WinME CD are bootable, only the early Win95/Win98 weren't bootable.
If your WinME CD isn't bootable it means you use a bad rip/poorly pirated copy.

In the future, never change your RAM when your PC is connected to the power outlet - no matter if it's turned on or not.

Did you use that hard drive when installing the new OS? If not, your data from it might still be recoverable.

Thank You, dear The Fifth Horseman,

This is very good warning!!
Never heard before.
Probably i changed about 10-12 times my RAM chips before.
Yes, i remember when the very RAM chip burned after the change with turned on power supply.

Yes, i used another HDD.
Using Partition Magic i created 4 HDD named as follow:
1. ME - for Win ME
2. XP - for Win XP
3. 7 - for Win 7 Ultimate (32 bit)
4. Archive - for my all Docs, Films, Programs etc.
This way i avoid lost of my data.

OFF
Brave yoga is proud to inform YOU all that after the kind support of Dosraider, i completed my project Virtual machine.
I realized this VM. Then i installed Windows Me on the VM.
So I have driver for my old Photomaker 3E Scanner and my hard problem is solved.

Note:
Dear Dosraider, i used Virtual PC 2007 SP1 but under Win 7 i received message that this OS not support Virtual PC 2007 so i was forced to use my second PC with XP. With XP i have no problem to install VM.

Thank You once again for the prompt help.

  1. If you have a Windows XP or Vista host, you need the 2007 version of Virtual PC:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/vir...l-pc-2007.aspx
Download it and install it; make sure it's the correct one, depending on whether your Windows host is 32-bit or 64-bit. Virtual PC is also available in many languages besides English. You'll be asked to validate your Windows license. You may read a warning that Virtual PC 2007 isn't "supported" for you edition of Windows, in particular if it's a Home edition. But you can take my word that it woks all right in XP and Vista Home.
    . . .
  2. If you have a Windows 7 host go to this webpage
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/vir.../download.aspx
BUT the default download is the "XP Mode", not what we want, so first of all click on "Don’t need XP Mode and want VPC only? Download Windows Virtual PC without Windows XP Mode."

    (click)

Next select your Windows 7 version, bitness (32 or 64), and preferred language, then download the Virtual PC installer (you'll be asked to validate your Windows license) and run it.
[indent][i]Windows XP Mode is Virtual PC bundled with an automatically installed and licensed Windows XP. . . . it's only available to Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate editions.

Talking Hurray!! I WON

Gracias, Japo,

Well, I will give more details about these Virtual machines on my both PC's.

I have 2 desk-top machines.
Let name them 1 (the best) and 2 (not the best).
1 has 5.6 rating. 2 has 1 rating.(Soon upgrade will start).
1 has win 7 and loosed ME and XP.
2 has XP and 7. Yesterday evening using XP and Virtual PC 7 i installed ME.
OK?
Today I decide to install XP and ME on machine N 1.
First i was forced to enter Bios and on Virtualization. Done.
Then i started to install Virtual PC 7 and then Windows XP Mode.
Suddenly all go down: I started installation of Virtual PC 7.
But can not know what happen.
Then i started installation of Windows XP Mode. Done but not started because..
.. an old VM has to be uninstalled and then try again ...

Then i became mad and said F--k you..(to system).

So i decided to use Virtual Box of Oracle.
Nice decision.
Without any Q. and troubles i installed VM.
Then the wise yoga installed XP Pro on VM on machine 1.
My target is the game System shock 2, which freezes on machine 2.
Maybe Videocard is reason for this fail.
Now i use 512 MB RAM and 6 GB space for new installed XP.

Yes, the next job is to install ME on machine 1.

If You ask me -
OK, brave, which platform is better for VM?
my answer is

Of course Oracle Virtual box.
Simple, user friendly..

yoga, you didn't answer previous quiestion from The Fifth Horseman: where was your old XP+ME? Is it totally different HDD, or do it share space with Win7, that is still alive? What happened with them?

P.S. Also, ME have not much in common with Win98SE in my opinion - but if you said it's similar, why not use 98 instead ME? (Yes, I am biased against ME

Also, this page looks like place to get Win98 and NT (aka Windows 2000 and maybe XP) drivers for your scanner. Last one not guaranteed - NT-drivers usually totally compatible with 2000, but not always (but frequent) compatible with XP too.

He he he,

I have one HDD of 164 GB.
I created 4 different sub HDD as follow:

1. ME - win Me - about 5 GB FAT 32
2. XP - win XP - about 20 GB - NTFS
3. 7 - win 7 32 bit - 65 GB - NTFS
4. ARCHIVE - 70 GB - NTFS

First, have no idea why, XP vanished.
Then, after burned MB ME followed XP.
But 7 and Archive were save.
This is my machine 1. Best.

But i installed new ME on my second, weak PC using Virtual PC 7 from XP.

...
No, net, i will not start dispute about difference between ME and Win98SE.
The reason for my love to ME is very simple, Smilling Spectre:
A friend from Russia gave me a CD with ME and lot of programs. So i used ME so many times, that ....

I am glad i find a way to use older programs than 7 without the terrible procedure to delete my stuff and start again with this fatal DOS fdisk.
Do You know fdisk? Sure, da.

OFF
For a while i will concentrate on Kindle..
I will be very glad if good hearded Russian mates recommend me good sites with free books of Russian lang.

Spacibo!
