Default Stargate

I'm looking for an old side-scroller game that pitted one little EGA starship against about 15 types of aliens, all coming in a big cloud at once, and you had to shoot like mad to survive. The level ended when you'd shot them all, and they would keep coming back around until you had, or they collided with you and you lost all your lives.

There was a round pink alien that flew backwards and "hunted" you halfway through, and various yellow and purple mutant ones that just flew straight at you. It was like Xatax but much, much older. In the first level there was a planet with "mutants" walking on it, but the planet disappeared when the last mutant died. After that the background was space. There was no penalty for losing the planet, so I'd just shoot the helpless mutants as well, because dodging the planet was annoying.

I don't think that the aliens could shoot back. Also, there was a screen-bomb you could drop that killed everything else on the screen at the time in one second, and you only got about three per game. Every level speeded up a little more than the previous one, until your reflexes gave out and you exploded in tinkly glory. There were only internal speaker sounds, as I recall. I don't remember there being any music.

Can anyone help?

Perhaps I can move this to Forgotten Games Bureau so more people can see it? After all, it should be placed there...

I found it. It's called Stargate, by Atari.

Not as much fun as I remember, though...

Hmmm... I was thinking of Defender when reading, but didn't suggested it because of "loosing a planet" part. I knew about the sequel, but I thought it is more or less same as Defender.

There is one arcade game which is probably the best defender clone there is. You naturally need MAME to play it, and I hate myself for forgetting a name. As soon as I rediscover the game, I'll let you know.

Anyway:

Stargate
1983, Atari

Neither the developer nor publisher are ESA-protected, the game is no longer supported, and I was unable to find any valid buylinks. Can a moderator confirm?
