I'm currently in favour of WinAmp for movies (avi, mpeg and mp4), but lately it has decided that some of the files can't be run properly. I get the sound, but not the video bit. I then used RealPlayer and WMP for the troublesome flicks (all mp4 and a couple of the others) but then they also refused to play them movies properly as well.

Now I'm using VLC, and all the movies are working fine, but the controls for playing/pausing and all that are not as good as in WinAmp, not to mention volume control.

(No codecs or anything has been installed, so I don't think that's the reason for the problems, also no changes were made in either of the players, at least not that I'm aware of)

Now I'm looking for a player that can handle any format/extention, and that has good play/volume controls.

Any you want to reccommend?

media player classic. one of the best video players i have ever used. and as for handling every format, you need the codecs as well before they playback in any media player.

If that's the AVI movies you've been playing on WinAmp, as far as at goes for Windows Media Player (version 10 here) you need a DIVX codec or sometimes an XVID codec to play them properly. And if you choose the WMPlayer for playing movies, you often need an AC3 filter for sound in AVI movies.

Media Player Classic with K-Lite Codec Pack.
This can open about any type of video out there, and is much more functional then Winamp. Also all keyboard shortcuts are fully reconfigurable.

Download the K-Lite Codec pack (relax it had nothing to do with K-lite)
It includes Media Player Classic

And you might just want to download The Quicktime Alternative for *.RM formats.

well, well... i downlaoded the K-Lite pack. hmm maybe they are too profesional for me to install but some movies just stopped working. i used ot have divx codecs installed but i had one or two movies that i couldn't play so i tried k-lite. but now the movie starts up, i can see the k icon and then everything just freezes. ok i can move the mouse arround but i can't shut down any window or do anything at all. very frustrating. i think i need ot find the old divx codes and install them back. this is such a dissapointment.

Use my links above to install DivX again. And for those movies that couldn't play, I'm sure installing the XviD codec additionally, also on the link, will help.

heh, heh. ... now i know what my problem is. i have win 98 and new divX codecs don't support win98. i installed the old ones again (one o fthe legacy versions) and now it works again. lame.

I prefer Mplayer.
www.mplayerhq.hu

Why?
It's fast
Plays just about anything (video, audio, dvd, even has tv tuner)
More options than you can remember

A downside is that it can't seem to handle DVD menu's properly.
