MC, have you read his post at all? He can play the game, but he has trouble with getting through the beginning of the actual gameplay, since it's a bit difficult for him.

O yes I have, but now it seems I didn't understand him. I thought he had problems starting it up, with a lamenting phrase like 'I played it months ago etc. !!'.
Sorry, my bad.

And concerning the game: I don't know it, so I can't help you. Sorry again.

Can someone post here something such as a quick-start guide for this game?

:help:

I tried playing this a few times a few months back and quickly gave up because I couldn't accomplish anything. Something outlining one possible approach to the first 10-20 minutes of gameplay would be much appreciated.

Firstly go to Mercury or one of the lunes of Jupiter and mine it. By mine, i am talking of send the lander to the planet and pick up minerals. You can do this by moving into the planet, making a complete scan, presing enter to launch lander and when the red bar is full or near to full, press esc to beam up. Some hints for this opperation that is the key of the game: 1 check out that the teutonic and weather level are low, too high means that are lightings and earquates so dont land until get the modifications for the lander. 2 check out temperature, over 300 degree is also too risky. 3 the bio scan will report the presence of wild creatures that can be dangerous but usefull prizes in near future. 4 the energy scan will report structures or items vital to win the game.
Move to the earth and make in the station orbiting it. Here you will be informed about the situation. And you will have to fight an Ilwrath Avenger, that is one of the most dangerous ships in game but cuz the lacking of cloaking device in this one and crew reduce to half it will be and easy win. You should check the keys for combat before load the game, you also can practice in melee moode. I can give you future help but it will be some kind of spoiler so check how it comes if you need something more, let me know

Here's another. This one makes more sense in terms of story. (IE, going to mercury isn't what a new player would do.)

First, the manual has the opening story. Reading it will help, but it's not necessary.

I assume you know where the planets are located in the solar system. Head to Earth. When you get close to earth you'll zoom in and a red orb will move quickly towards you. You can not avoid it. Listen to it's message.

Earth itself is slave shielded and there's nothing you can do with it. So go to the space station and talk to Commander Hayes. He'll ask you for radioactives so go get some.

Got to Mercury. Do all scans on Mercury then send down a lander. Dodge the hazards and run over the radioactive mineral deposits you find. After you've picked up a few press your secondary button to recall your lander to the ship.

Return to the space station and talk to Commander Hayes again. It's a lengthy converastion. You'll need to go to the moon and poke around a bit. Use your lander's gun to kill the robots on the surface, collect some minerals if you like, and run your lander into what's generating the energy reading you spotted durring scans.

Go back to Hayes and tell him your findings and you'll be interupted by an attacking Illwrath, your first battle. However, this is a push over compared to later battles because this particular Illwrath is in a bad way. Choose your earthling cruser (not your main ship) point towards the Illwrath and press your primary weapon a few times into it. If by some miracle it survives, turn around and press thrust to get away from it before it gets too close, wait for your batteries to recharge, and fire again. Your missles will track so don't worry too much about aiming.

After the Illwrath is dead Commander Hayes will be more than willing to support your cause and the actuall game begins.

(A little hint, before you set out, sell your weapons system on your main ship. At this point they're of little use and will buy enough speed and turning upgrades to take the edge off the sluggishness of your main ship. Also, do not buy any more earthling crusers at this time.)

Now set off mining the solar system, returning to the space station to dump off your minerals. Do not miss the chance to go to Pluto. It's hard to see because it looks like a purple star on the western end of it's orbit, but trust me, that's the planet. Don't miss it, no matter what.

By now, you should be off. If you want to find a system that's rich in minerals go check out Alpha Centauri. Also, read the story line to find Vela, your home world (it's impossible to see on the main map without knowing where to zoom in). Aside from that, expore and follow the in game clues to save the universe!

And you made all the spoiler that i avoided... :bleh:
Some corrections or differents ideas to guesst, nice hint to demont the wapons but speed and turning rate are for the people who already played it and becomes stick of see the slow moving ship. Better build cargo bays, landers and crew pods (yes, sacrifice some crew to land in hot planets with rare metals, if you lose all crew in the lander you lost the lander, in a battle all crew killed --> your ship is lost). Alfa Centauri isnt the best planet to start mining(there are too many hot ones), but u will found interesant people in any of the bigger planets of the map. First times go mining and when u can build up some power start to explore but not the near planets move some deep in the space, not to centre there is a war going on there. The are many ways to win the game, just dont get killed and dont spare time

But there is already a SC III :bleh:
I know that, as a matter of fact I've just reviewed SC3 for this site, it will be uploaded soon so please check it out. But the fact is that many people would like to see a sequel to SC2 done as if SC3 never existed. From Wikipedia:

Quote:
Although some consider the third game to be good enough in its own right, a stark majority found the third installment a dire disappointment after Star Control II. A select number of fans of the two earlier games have even decided to consider SC3 non-canonical (sic).

Mr. Wallet, everything is like guesst said, but the only thing you must do is NOT skipping the intro, it's part of the story. If you watch it, then act accordingly, and then subsequently pay attention to what you're told during the game, and act accordingly and so on, there's no way for you to get lost. If you're not going to pay attention to this game's story then don't skip the story, just don't play the game, because there will be no game left--and it's such a *great* game.

A safer place for radioactives is one of the moons of Jupiter.

Thrusters are crucial to get more out of the fuel, which is important at the early stages when even fuel is expensive.

I agree that Alpha Centauri is not good for mining (although the surrounding stars may be), but visit anyway for a vital interaction as Laiocfar said. A better bet I think is the Volantis system, it even throws in some bio-life for your hunting pleasure . I never buy more than one lander in the game. Do not venture far from home until the ship is fully fitted with thrusters and turning jets at least. Do not leave home without visiting Pluto, it could well mean the difference between survival and a quick death.

As Japofran said, talking to aliens and the starbase commander provides hints on what to do next. But when you're ready to start going farther out, you could follow the story arc and try heading to Vela. You could drop by Giclas/Krueger systems for some *ahem* freebies. But my preference would be to visit the Spathi, those in the know will know why .

An aside about mining. Once you feel reasonably powerful (weapon modules/escort ships) and comfortable in ship controls, forget about mining and mine your enemies instead. No cargo bays, higher and quicker returns but perhaps higher risk. The Mycon are particularly easy and profitable LOL.

Someone should do a poll ranking starships.
About minig or look for war spoils, i prefer to mine... it gives you the chance to hunt and also its the way of the explorer. Anyway you can make extra RUswhen load full by moving into Mycoon space and sending your fellow arilous to battle.
