Does anybody know of a good, free video making program that I can use to make avatars and small videos out of scratch?

Do you mean like a frame based .GIF editor?
That sort of program would probably be best for avatar animation. Although I don't know of any programs off head.

To make animated .gif I use GIMP in there you have just to put the frames in separate layers, save as .gif animation.... and you have a beautyful animated avatar like mine
For something more professional... i don't know :P |

You can do them in photoshop too, in image ready. File -> Modify in image ready, or something like that. Been a while.
