Why is a game that is still being sold to the public even mentioned on a website that, as I understand it, only offers games for download that are no longer available for sale?

What usually happens, is that the game is added quite a while before it became available for sale on, say, gog.com. Abandonware used to be just that. There is a new trend to keep old games alive, though, and we support gog because they have the right to sell the games from the developers. Once a game is sold, it's no longer abandonware. We don't take the review down, however, but instead insert a buylink so its fans can find a working copy of the game that is also supported (and often patched or improved a little in terms of sound configuration) and runs well in DOSbox.

I hope that helps

And sorry if we've been a bit snippy with you

And anyways, Abandonia is not just an abandonware site anymore. It's a site dedicated to old games, generally.

Is there a gog.com discussion thread?

I loved Patrician 2/3, but 4 just butchered it... it was like seeing lords of the realm 3 happen all over again, though not as drastic.

The first one definitely looks to be the game with the most atmosphere though.

Here's a tip for people who don't know how to get Elderman or increase quickly in the game.

Start out in Hamburg: there's 26 pepper there
loan untill you have 11000 thaler and buy them all.

If you want to 'cheat' the system, sell the 26 pepper, save and reload.
You can buy it again for 450 each.

If you want to play it 'honoustly' just wait 1 day, and hope theres still another 26 there.. buy, wait 1 day, sell, wait 1 day, buy/sell etc untill theres only 5/6 pepper left.. then just pay off your debt

For income later on you can set cities (allways put your home town to 10000 units of warehouses) to build 1000-5000 units of warehouse @39 each then buy up loads of wine in bremen and hamburg and start trading.
If bremen or hamburg has wine <450 value, loan tons and tons of money and buy up a stockpile of it.

You can also use another trick to earn millions of thaler but you'll cripple the town into poverty-stricken for some time .

Buy up all the arms from the blacksmith, then move ALL of it to another city and just leave 31 arms in your ship. Sell it back to the blacksmith via the Inn, you'll get a super high price for it (1000-1200 thaler). Then buy the 31 back from the blacksmith (on the pricelist it says 1300+ but when you actually buy it, it only costs 600-800 thaler).

Using this you can earn infinite amount of money, you can also donate tons to the church for quick support in the town (mayor/elderman status)

I think I heard something about Patrician 3 a while back. Does anyone know if it has been released or if it's even in production?

Edit: It seems that the zip file contains the game twice. In the patrician folder, there is another folder called patrician, containing the full game. This should probably be corrected, even though the size difference will be less than two MB. There is no reason to squander server space.

Edit 2: The game hangs every time I go to the town scribes office and select record personal data (or the other option). Does anybody else have this problem, and is it important to the game?
To fix hang in scribe's office you need to have "virtual printer", so write in Dosbox.conf or .bat file before starting the game:
[parallel]
parallel1=file
