MY modem dont have the option to separate the connection, so when i want to play online or come here she wants to chat with her fiends or do something. And im fairly sure that my mother wont buy anything that involves computer technology JUST BECAUSE she dont have any idea how she will bring this back when the 3 years here ends.

SO you will stay overthere only for 3 years?

There are couple ways to share one modem, but not sure what OS and what hardware you have.

For most basic web share, each computer needs to have a network interface card and you need cat5 crossover cable.

What kind of modem do you have?

(can one of admins split this to a new topic?)

There is no way to share a modem, what you can share is the connection leading to it. But you need a network between the two computers first.

Then it's a simple matter of sharing the internet connection from the first computer who has the modem to the second.

If both computer have a modem, you can't connect to your provider with both at the same time. That's physically impossible and I am yet to see a provider stupid enough to allow 2 simultaneous connection to a single user.

First of all... are we talking about a DAILUP or a Fixed connection here?

Eagle: We have a few who allow it here... it has its uses..

So you want to simotanously have to computers connected to one connection? This would be easy for a highspeed connection. Try daisy chaining your computers. The only prob would be you need the first pc in the chain to be on for the other one to work.

Thats's only downpoint.

If you have not OS that supports internet sharing, you can use software like Sygate Home Network.

If it's DSL or Cable modem, then best thing is to get router (today they cost about $40) or at least switch (worst case hub or nothing - cross over cable).

For DSL, it's either Router or nothing... trust me.. Switch is pointless...

Yeah, like pirating one client. Mainly why I said I never encountered a provider stupid enough to do so around here. You bet half the planet would not have a legit connection.
