Default UFO problems in Windows XP

I'm hoping Titan can help me out with this. Sorry for the long backstory...

I recently had the urge to play X-COM again and found my old cd copy to be missing. Unflustered, I found my old PC Gamer disc (disc 5.10 from July of 2000) that included the full copy. It also includes a program that can be used for slowing down the computer to run older games properly.

I installed and ran without slowing down the machine and it seemed to work fine. I think. The graphics are all whacked out (mirroring, can't see anything straight) but the sounds seem to be fine. I did a search on eBay and Google and found a review pointing to this site.

I found out that X-COM is called UFO: Enemy Unknown and I downloaded the version offered on this site as it said in the epinions.com article that this version would work on Windows XP. The text at the bottom of the page for UFO: Enemy Unknown also said something akin to "works with a patch for Windows XP".

My problem: It works the SAME as the game on my PC Gamer disc. The graphics are still wonky and I have no idea what to do. Please help me!!!
