ok, I have some more linux questions for all of you slightly exasperated people out there.
Im making a new topic as these questions are about software/compatibility- not getting it installed well I have debian 3.1r1 on my computer now, and I have learned a reasonable amount.. installing packages, playing games.. the included ones and a couple of admittedly fairly lame ones I installed (lincity for example, i hear theres a new version around- lincity-N or something) well I have been trying to play transport tycoon deluxe. my #1 fav game my brother is addicted to it as well. I use (on this windows comp) the patched abandonia windows version... but whenever I put the file on a cd-rw and try and mount it it says it cannot be mounted as its posisbly not in the right format  so i got the DOS version, and dosbox for linux (good ol' debian cds) the only problem is, and its quite a big one: dosbox runs INSANLEY slowly. you put the CPU cycles above 20k and its about 1 fps... is linux just slooooow at games?? SLOW AT 1995 GAMES?! I think it may be beacuse the desktop is being drawn behind the DOS box window, its a long, long shot but I dont like having windowed dosbox anyway.. off I go to change the .conf file.. except I cant find it- can someone tell me where it is? another thing: wine. a version came on cd (some alpha version). I installed it and it works with the gangsters: organised crime setup just superly. the installation whizzes by and I install directx 6 . I find gangsters in the applications menu under the section "." (why?) and run. the wine thing comes up and at first it said insert the cd but I changed the wine conf file with its configuration option for drive d to be /home/cdrom0 or whatever. now it says its exited with an error and in the log it says it cannot find c:\hothouse creations\gangsters\gangsters.EXE. I cant find the directory where wine installs all this fake stuff so I am at a loss! anyone help? the website said it worked.. is it possible to work WoW on linux??? :w00t: i do freecraft (clone of WoW 2) but its lacking a bit so my questions on compatibility and things its not reeeallly about just DOS games so I wont put it in the compatibility section but do, do move it oh and I still cant change Hard drive permissions  1 more thing: when do you guys think packages.debian.org will be fixed |

Well I run Dosbox under linux quite nicely.
if 20k cycles results in 1 fps then 20k cycles is too high. On my pc Dosbox runs at least as good as in linux. try setting frameskip to 1 to see if it helps. to find your configfile for dosbox: There is none on linux by default. you have to create one. inside dosbox: config -writeconf /tmp/dosbox.conf exit then you can edit it. copy it to your current directory or rename/move it to ~/.dosboxrc if you want to have it always started. Hope this helps.

I copy it to the same one the prog is in? edit edit ahh I seee it creates its own .conf file right oh btw I try every CPU cycle and get one FPS.. I put the frameskip on ten and things move a bit faster.. they move every 100 metres of track :not_ok: still, thanks for the DOSbox help wine anyone? oh and allllsoooo my linux was taking up 470 mbs of ram yesterday!!!!! i have 760mbs but WHAT THE! |

The 3D screensavers (i.e. xscreensaver) run slowly because you don't have any hardware accelleration. This is most likely because you don't have DRI enabled or because your kernel isn't correctly loading / have compiled support for your video card. <!--QuoteBegin-Javaguy my linux was taking up 470 mbs of ram yesterday!!!!! i have 760mbs but WHAT THE![/quote] Read my post in the Explorer Switch thread. Linux manages your physical memory differently, which means that most or all of your memory being "in use" doesn't mean that your machine is running slow, it's just the result of a different model of memory allocation. Like I noted above, the "lack" of available memory isn't what's slowing your machine down, it's actually the lack of video card support (in the context of xscreensaver; it's your DOSBox config in the context of your games). I know you asked about WINE, but I don't have the time at the moment to run through it's virtual filesystem. You've also misconfigured the CD drive option. |

uhhuh right
well on the video card drivers option i selected "nv" assuming it stood for nvidia so how can I enable 3d acceleration? install some 3rd party linux nvidia drivers? and uh what did I do wrong in wine? how should I get it to work? *oops* oh when linux starts I do get a few *failed* messages something like invalid IRQ adress edit: I got dosbox fixed and TTDX runs, but its rubbish because I cant have any sound (the setup program doesnt save the config and reverts back to no sound) and its a bit sluggish in click response, and if I use the patch I get no vehicles  so when I get the net ill use the abandonia version with the net |

As to WoW on Wine: Check the Wine Application DB on Warcraft. It seems it runs after a fashion, but you better read the entire HOWTO on the subject!
There's also some info about Gangsters in there... |
