Not even HotU is willing to touch Alpha Centaury. Sorry but this one is a no-go.

I only played a demo of SMAC, so I'm wondering, is it very similar to the "sci-fi scenario" in the Test of Time expansion of Civ 2? I know the general idea is pretty much the same, but the sci-fi scenario was more of a total conversion, right? Anyway, the multiple maps idea that Test of Time used and the "plotline" along the tech tree made it seem more atractive to me than he little I saw of SMAC.

Well, there are many differences between the two. In SMAC you only have one planet and not the several "planets" you have on the sci fi of ToT. SMAC also has new and different map, which in many ways is better but also worse. It is more 3D and you can clearly see the elevations. Though (for me) it is far more difficult to know when you are on a mountain and when you are on a hill. There are some major differences in diplomacy and gameplay. Like the use of Borders and a much better diplomatic system. Or for example the customizing of units. Where ToT Sci Fi scenario is ToT in a different setting, if you play SMAC thinking of Civ in space (or alpha centauri) you might feel dissapointed by the game. BUT, if you take SMAC for a strategy game unrelated to Civ (as it should have been promoted IMO), then you are in for a treat, cause it is a very good strategy game.

SMAC is similar to CIV3 and CIV 2.

Similar in the technology way and the way cities are governed.

It has one advantage over both - you can create new units by yourself equiping them with wepaons and armor to your liking.

Unfortunatelly, as you can see in post above, you still have to buy it to play it.

IIRC it was requested before and is either still sold or protected, don't remember which.

The first one is an expansion named Alien Crossfire. Btw: sold is a special case of protected.

Default Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri (aka SMAC) [SOLD]

I'm not sure if it's abandonware, but on it's on HOTU so it should be. It came out in '99 and is now out of print. So.....
I have a few copies of it, but I don't know if I can upload it since I bought them when they were still in print, and thus are unrippable.
