I bought this game for a very low price a year or so after its release. The problem I had was that the backdrops were too static - that they didn't feel as part of the game. Think Final Fantasy 7. The problem with this was that any object you need sticks out so it makes things too easy to find them. Also, animation is too wooden, and it lacks something.

Well I must admit that the game runs fine for me, no gliches or technical issues. But I just don't like this game - the corny sense of humour combined with the sluggish control system - blegh! On the flip side the graphics are phenomenal, with re-drawn close-ups and such things. But this one just didn't do it for me - I gotta be honest.

I really like this game.

Having one problem though, can't get past the locked door in the land of shadows cell.

I got the key from the old man, but when I try it on the door in the original room, I get "does nothing".

Is this a glitch?

Go to dosbox.sourceforge.net and download the emulator. Read their FAQ.
Go to main Abandonia page to read our DosBox FAQ.
Get D-Fend to simplify configuring DosBox.
Read the stickies in the Troubleshooting forum, there are several useful links to archived threads there.

In other words, you just asked a noob question. :P

I noticed a graphical error in the game. When you're in the Land of Shadows and you use the spoon to di gup the loose stone, the loose stone/hole is on the ground in your room, so when you enter through the hole, logically the hole should be on the ceiling of the room you entered (the room with the old prisoner). However, the hole is on the floor of the room with the old prisoner.

EDIT: Oh wait. If the hole leads to a tunnel under the floor, that the hole on the floor of the old prisoner's room makes sense. Don't mind me.

Is there an "easy" way to self-modify the abandonia version to have it include the speech file?
I still have my original copy, the only problem is that no matter what i do or how hard i try the game simply won't install from the cd.
Dosbox gives wrong cd errors, winxp compatibility gives directx errors and both abort the installation.
The abandonia version runs fine with the dosbox/d-fend combo and as previously said by others the speech.dat file doesn't do a thing when copied to the folder. I checked the *.cfg file and ingame and both say speech is turned on so my guess is that the game refers to a series of 0 sec soundfiles or that theres some sound problem with dosbox.

Any suggestions and/or solutions?

Fable looks good but I can barely get past the first screens (in DOSbox). I keep losing the "action" mouse -- it turns into the plain arrow for clicking through dialogue, and I can't go anywhere or do anything. Is this the mouse stickiness mentioned in the review? Because it doesn't seem to go away. It keeps happening at the town gate and the old house with the ghost.
