The level cap is the most annoying thing here. I mean, sometimes special monsters will go down faster if I invest points in Hands of God, while others require Silver Bullet, or Rainbow, etc. So, if I have spent skill points on certain skills, I won't have a chance to invest them on other points *needed* to defeat other monsters. There is no way to change the skills as well, 'cause Djan is only on the third island, and can only reset the skills one time.
If only there is no level cap, and I can train indefinitely... *sigh* (and while it may make the game easier, which is not acceptable for some people, IMHO it will also make the game much more enjoyable for other people like me). Money is never enough, too. Items in inventory cannot be sold and can only be destroyed. Such a waste of money as well, IMHO. Found a boss guide here: http://www.freewebs.com/spiritengine/ But the tips for the Grandfather battle does not work for me. I'll try again for the next few days. If I still fail, I guess I'll just stop playing. Too bad, really, especially since there seems to be a sequel, The Spirit Engine 2, coming. |

You´re right about that sequel, but if I remember correctly, that sequel was not planned to be freeware.

I think I will start all over again, starting next Monday or Tuesday. I really feel it is a shame not to finish this game, eventhough it has given me enough frustration.
I think I will go by _r.u.s.s.'s recommendation to have 2 mages and 1 priest. I will have Clementas, Pippa, and Eisfford. I will focus Clementas on Party Healing and Hands of Gods, maybe with a bit of Party Blessing or Party Recharge. For Pippa, I will focus on Kinetic Shield and Kinetic Smash, maybe a bit of Rainbow as well. For Eisfford, Magic Shield and Life Drain, and also a bit of Rainbow too. Do you guys think it will be easier this time with 2 mages and 1 Priest compared to a balance party the last time? Any suggestions, recommendations, and other inputs are very welcomed. |

if you want life drain i would use clara, in case of esifford it's better to use lightning or kinetic smash (just see "toggle details"). pipa has mastered rainbow. and it's not good to have same skills becouse of different resistances monsters have

Apparently someone can finish the game in about 2.5 hours

Okay, I will restart playing today. Yes, I think Eisfford will be better with Kinetic Smash, while Life Drain will go for Pippa. Clara will be better in that skill, but I want to try using Clemetas. Somehow he reminds me of Jack Crow, a movie character played by James Woods in the 1998 movie "John Carpenter's Vampires". Thanks again for the recommendation, _r.u.s.s.

Woohoo! :brain: Finally managed to beat the game with Clemetas, Pippa, and Eisfford! The party finished the game at level 53. Pippa with a level-30 Life Drain experienced much trouble with the final boss, so I switched her to casting Kinetic Shield instead. Eisfford was quite comfortable throughout the game with a level-30 Kinetic Smash, only when facing Riot Tropper she needed to switch to Rainbow once in a while. Clemetas was the full-time healer (up to level 30) and occasional Hand of the Gods caster (only up to level 8).
The priestess swimsuit worn by Michelle in Clemetas outro is a nice touch My mistakes from the previous gameplay with Clara, Edward, and Matthieu: 1. I was trying to have a "Jack of All Trades" party, not knowing there would be a level cap. Thus, I started experiencing trouble in World 3, and finally got stuck with the Grandfather battle in World 4, because I did not have enough offensive power to bring him and his familiar down. So, a "Master of One" party fares better in this game. 2. I spent too much money almost in every vendor to upgrade my equipment. Thus later on I was out of money so often just in order to save the game. Hence the frustration that followed. I will replay this game once again, maybe tomorrow, this time I will follow the Speed Walkthrough I posted earlier. However, instead of using Peter, Zepher, and Matthieu, I will opt for Clemetas, Zepher, and Samuel. I will have Clemetas, being mostly defensive in the previous gameplay, playing offensive this time, since that should suit his character as depicted in the intro. Zepher will replace his place as the healer of the group. I doubt I will finish the game in 2.5 hours as mentioned in the walkthrough, but let me see if two-priests-and-a-hunter party will fare better than two-mages-and-a-priest one. Wow... I started replaying early using the Speed Walkthrough, as I mentioned yesterday, and I am now currently in World 4 prior to the Grandfather battle. Forget the 2.5 hours, I am already about 4.5 hours now, but it sure is much, much more faster than the previous gameplay. If nothing goes wrong, meaning no problem with the Grandfather's, the crazy elevator's, and the Final boss' battles, theoretically I should finish the game in a few hours. I need to take a break now, though. So I will continue later.
Wish me luck for the upcoming aforementioned battles |

Yep, finished the game again after a few hours, overall faster than the previous gameplay, but I still needed to reach level 51 to finish. It is true, though, that according to the Speed Walkthrough one can play the game without even dying once. Of course I sort of *cheated* as well, since whenever my party did not seem to be able to win a battle, I just pressed the Escape key to return to the menu and to load previous save state
Stilll, Samuel's showdown in Saline caught me by surprise. It is the one thing not described in the Speed Walkthrough of course, since I was using Samuel instead of Matthieu. So I didn't equip him with the better armor and Pearl Talisman of Heart, and he died (thus it counted as one dying in the game stats). Now that I think about it, my original plan with all-priests party really should be able to finish the game, except that the challenge will be greater, especially against those creatures with MX immunity (so Hand of the Gods won't work against them). An all-hunters party, I reckon will also be tougher, since they will have to rely on Recover skill. All-mages party, as Hamster of Doom said, may have no chances since they have no Recover nor Party Healing skill. Anyway, great game. I learnt my mistakes, and take back some of the criticism I mentioned about the game frustration earlier. I, however, still stand by my opinion that the ability to sell unused items in the inventory, more save points (with lower price) or the ability to save the game at anytime-anyplace, and no level cap limitation will make the game more fun. Maybe it can be set through difficulty option. Like for example, in easy/normal mode there is no level cap (gamer can play as long as they like, building higher level party), while in hard mode there is level cap, and so on. That way, people can play with their preference. Some people like to play smarter, others like to play longer and more casually at their own pace Still, kudos to this game. It really takes freeware indie game to a higher level k: k: k: Anybody has any news on The Spirit Engine 2 development? I searched with Google, but found no news and the Natomic website seems to be in re-design phase still. Time to move on to another game |
