no, abandonware are games, that companies no longer support. They are not released for free, and it is actually illegal to download them.

Freeware games are games that are released free to the public, so that anyone can download them and distribute them. It doesn't matter who has made them, as long as they are legally free to distribute and download.

Oh hoho, let's not get intp THIS shall we? Abandonware games ARE legal to download, otherwise we wouldn't be here, now would we. Let's not give anyone new here the wrong impression. We even comply with ESA.

Remember kids, abandonware is LEGAL! (it's oldwarez that aren't legal).
Now get it right Bernie or i'll flagpole your boxers.

Are you kidding MrBackAlleySka?
From the site's FAQ:
Quote:
Wikipedia: "Abandonware is computer software which is no longer being sold or supported by its copyright holder. Alternately, the term is also used for software which is still available, but on which further support and development has been deliberately discontinued." Since the software is no longer sold or supported, the copyright holders are not directly harmed in any way. This is why abandonware sites are, for the most part, ignored by the law. The distribution of copyrighted software however is, and will allways be, illegal!
At best we're 'semi-legal', whatever that means :P

... You know abandonia itself admits it's illegal.. so what is your problem?

what do you think all the problems with ESA are about?

But abandonia try to keep some limits , because if they are piss off ESA can make some damage here, the best way is flowed by Kosta and company.

Pffft. Something isn't Illegal if you get away with it. It's only illegal if you get caught and reprimanded. :P Anyways, I don't care what's written where, the site's doing nothing illegal. That "Copyright stuff is heald under copyright for 95 or so years, and NO software game has been through that 95 or so year limit yet" garbage is just wastes of font pixels. Unless you'd enjoy calling those stupid laws like "No slapping a man on the back in Georgia, you can't have a girraffe tied to a pole in wherever, no swimming in the middle of a dry road during church" laws, laws that need upholding. A law is an enforced rule, if you don't inforce that law...well. Abandonware's legal. Deal with it.

No matter how stupid you think the law is, it is still in a technical way illegal!

The thing is just that the owners of the games either don't care, or don't exist anymore. Still it is illegal, no matter what your personal opinion is. So stop saying something other than the truth!

I think what Doubler said, that abandonware is semi-legal, suits the best. But it is still not LEGAL.

anyway you brought this thread way off-topic.
