Wel, last night i made it to the gates of the labyrinth, the
water world is quite fun, and has a very scary evil dragon
in it, i never thought the posessoini spell would be so useful,
and it was fun to see more of the Sartans....the graphics
in this game are very nice

onward and so on......

Sebatianos

Please can you help. I must be really thick . I have tried everything I can think of to open Deathgate.

I read your comments earlier re D:\ also re legend.ini. I couldn't get DOSBox to open a directoy D: in its C drive (presumably because of the : meaning it was a drive?). Have followed the great DOSBox article & set up the files as in that & successfully played some games. My D Drive is the CD Rom drive so don't know how to make DOSBox recognize a D: directory. I did open a d (without colon)directory under Dos CDRIVE & extracted to that but couldn't seem to open DGATE from there

I also changed legend ini to C:\DGATE and extracted to windows C:\DGATE but it seems to open it to C:\DGATE\DGATE. When I double click DGATE.exe it brings up a Dos window then the whole screen goes blank and then it returns to desktop with the same window I had open

PLEASE - I'm going crazy here. I really want to play this game. Could you possibly spare the time to talk me thro' step by painful step?

Hope you can help
Jo

It's not that complicated if you know the trick

Here's what you should do:

- download the game and extract it (best this would be on drive C:\games), so you will have a folder named C:\games\DGATE (and the game should be in this folder)

- after installing DOSBox (don't change any configurations) run it.

- type the following in DOSBox (after running it - if you changed any configurations this may not work): mount d: c:\games (this will make DOSBox think everything you have in the folder C:\games - is actually your D: drive).

- now type CD DGATE
- DGATE
and the game should start (I didn't try the whole thing out right now, so if there's something wron just let me know)

I got most of the way thro' your instructions (including mounting d as c\games) but fell at the last hurdle "type cd dgate". It said "unable to change to dgate"

Anyway I foxed it. At the c prompt I typed D (colon) & it changed to D so then I could type cd dgate & then dgate AND THE GAME STARTED!

In DOSBox config, following the article I had mounted d as the cd rom drive but have now changed that to mount d c\games3 so it will always do that otherwise it had to be mounted every time

Bit worried about not having it reading the cd rom drive BUT thought if I made this separate folder c\games3 for deathgate, any games on cd rom could be loaded into there if they needed to be run from D. Don't know whether that makes sense.

Also, do you change the Sound config. in install.com? I changed it to SoundBlaster16 as in article. Have you found that the best for this game?

Anyway, thanks so much for your help, Sebatianos

Well, I finally made it to the end of DG, quite a finish, and that nasty
evil dragon keesp trying to get into the sacred circle at the end,
he is a real PEST. i enjoyed the game overall, the graphics are pretty good,
not as good as kyrandia, but few are, the interface works pretty well
also, i got a little tired of trying to read the small type of the extensive
text, the conversations are sort of fun, and the puzzles are workable,
sometimes after working on them a bit. Do save a LOT, because there
are quite a few places you can get Deaded.

It is similar in some ways to Quest for the King VI, Simon I and II,
and some others, but I do think they did a pretty good job with this
one, the full screen puzzles are fun, the Pipe, the "pick the magic word" one
at the end, and so on
enjoy k:

I am having issues getting this game to run via DOSbox. I have tried all the suggested methods above (mount drive to d:,etc), but I am constantly getting an error reading "VOCDATA".

I think it is an issue with settings in the legend.ini or install.ed. I am using the HOTU verison.

If anyone could post exactly what they have in those files, I'd appreciate it.

I played with HOTU version early this year, did not encounter any installation/game problem, and I don't remember doing anything particular with either files (legend.ini or install.ed). Perhaps the file containing "VOCDATA" in your installation is corrupted?

I suppose that is possible. I will re-download just in case.

Are you running the game from DOSbox? Did you simpy run install, then run dgate?

No you should not run INSTALL.

You should (acording to the review):
Quote:
Technical note:
This game must be run from the D:\DGATE directory, so extract your archive to D:. Also there is no sound if running in WinXP, so I recommend VDMSound or off course DOSBox.
Most of the games on this site are already configured and prepared so all you need to do is extract the zip file and run the executable! Only if that doesn't work you may consider an instalation (the review will usually tell you that).
