Anybody here?
I try running U6 under dosbox and I get the same sound problems. No sound when the actual game starts, just the sound at the intro. Could anybody say what i should choose in dosbox configuration? I read here that adlib is best option but where is it? There are just variants of soundblaster as available options in the config file. Also choosing some other soundblaster rather than 16 doesn't help at neither helps playing with rates.
Another thing that bothers me is darkness. It's day ingame, 11 am or something but it's dark everywhere - indoors, outdoors, even near a street light. When i use a torch it becomes light, but you see, walking with torches everywhere and always is not very encouraging. Any ideas about this issue?
I'd like to play it so much, i just started and the first bits of dialogue are already full of ultima humour that I liked so much about U7 and the world is as free and open for exploring. But it's not as simple technically as with exult, alas.

It's quite simple. You leave the sound card configuration in dosbox.conf as it is, Soundblaster 16 by default I think. Then you fire up DosBox, run install.exe or setup.exe, not sure right now which one it is for this game, and select Adlib, there's only the option for music, no sound effects. After that you should be able to hear music playing in the game.
About the issue with the darkness, is your monitor set to a rather dark contrast by chance? If not, what version of DosBox are you using to play Ultima VI?

Thanks, now it works fine. I didn't run the install file, guessed it wasn't necessary. And my darkness problem seems to be not a problem, somehow at 11 A.M. the sun wasn't above the horizon. I waited some hours, watched the moons move on the left display, then the sun have risen and the darkness was gone.

I have a theory that the crackling is actually this game's way of having sound for fire. See if you get the crackle during the day with no torch lit and not near any fires... It's like the flame sword in U7, but since it's so much more primitive it sounds like a bug.

You can't. Unless I missed something, at the end of Ultima IV and V your character returned to the real world. At the start of Ultima VI they are drawn back to Brittania, without any preparation.

Question Invincible winged gargoyles and other irregularities

I am a huge fan of this game, I played it back in 1991 or something and never finished it. I am replaying it now in DosBox.

Well I have done many searches but I cannot find the answers to these questions...

Well when you go to a shrine, winged gargoyles will appear, many times more than one. Up until you kill one, they can be hit and damaged. But... after you kill one, the second and third ones become practically unhittable and invincible. This means certain death for you and your party since you cannot run from them.

One time I even got in a skiff and it followed me out over the ocean and killed everyone.

Now I do not remember them being invincible or being able to walk on the ocean but I cannot remember very well my childhood from 1991.

I have a feeling this is not a bug and is meant to keep you away from the shrines until you have aquired spells such as death etc. that you can cast on them?

I appreciate any info on this from someone who knows. Since I am running DosBox and do not have an old 386 to verify is this is correct game behaviour or not. Thanks!
