Well, if you could give us some more information we would gladly help you

First: Are you using Windows Messenger or MSN Messenger (Just in case...MSN & Windows Messenger look alot alike)?

2nd. What version of MSN/Windows Messenger are you using? If you don't know, open up the main MSN/Windows Messenger version, click Help, and then About, it'll say "Build x.x (xxxxxxxxxx)" where X is a bunch of numbers. Copy those into here so we know what version of MSN you have.

3rd. Do you get any kind of error message or anything that might give a hint to what is wrong?

And finally...

Can you login to Hotmail without getting errors?

1: im quite sure she's on msn
2: Unsure, most likely latest version
3: She said something about a 'Service Temporarily Unavaliable' message when trying to log into her mum's

Hotmail: I asked her this too...

Are you running Windows XP with Service Pack 2?

I had that problem on my wife's computer because the Firewall in WinXP SP2 automatically blocks messenger and you need to go into Control Panel -> Security Center -> Windows Firewall, then click on the exceptions tab and check the Microsoft Messenger box.

That's the error message you get in that situation.

Don't know whether that helps.

Just to check - are we talking about two different computers, or two accounts on one computer?

Might be worth checking the firewall though - that's the only thing I can think would be a problem but it wouldn't be different for different accounts!

If her account works fine, then I isn't going to be a problem with the local machine.

It's unlikely that both accounts are on the same msn server, so one could easily stop work ing and the other be fine.

I'd just wait and see what happens

When you switch accounts, make sure the first is disconnected. Otherwise it will stay up for at least 5 minutes with your IP on the server and they'll refuse your connection because they think you are still using it.

I myself get this problem when I have a power outage and my router grab a new IP. But in that case it's because my profile is already on another IP.
