That's the problem.
Certain games you can host.
By server based games are impossible, if you need to tap into a server (MSN Gaming Zone, Unreal Tournament Servers for example.) It's impossible to host, or sometimes play.
Tribes runs on the same preset as Unreal Tournament, so it's highly likely the LAN is the problem.

If you are using firewall, you have to forward ports to local IP address of the computer.

For example, if your local IP address for computer that will host tribe server is 192.168.1.100, then go to router and enable ports forwarding (needed range for ports) to that IP.

Also, as other suggested, you have to open those same ports on local firewall too.

but see, I dont know which ports to open. I tried one which should have worked, but it didn't. I got another game working with port forwarding, so I obviously have incorrect ports

Why doesn't Abandonia have star seige tribes, it was a full version free download on fileplanet when Tribes 3 came out. So was the seccond one.

If you have a LAN, disabling the firewall will NOT work.
There is no way to play on a LAN, because the connection is spread around, certain games don't recognize the path they're meant to connect to, so you're out of luck.
