Just curious. When, in your humble abandonia-biased opinion, was the golden age?

EDIT: For the record. IMHO, the golden age was the C64 era, simply because of the availability/prices, number of genres (when was the lastest space invaders clone released for XP?), ingenuity in gameplay, addictiveness level, beauty through simplicity, and last: Many ground breaking genres were invented in this era. I know that most of the arcade games were later written for the 64 and suchlike, but the flood of games and the broad variety at that time is, to me anyway, still mindnumbing.

Of course the MS-DOS period... many good games were made back then and would be a waste of time to enlist just a small part of these games... or maybe I'm just melancholic because those games made me so computer addicted and MS-DOS was the first operating system were I learned to work on a computer.... sigh the good ol' days

The golden age of PC gaming ended roughly around the 90's. That's my own personnal oppinion.

I'm pretty sure that the economical point is the least of the poll poster concern. :P

Golden Age is now because new games are coming out and I really don't want to play the same games for years :P.

Oh, but it wasn't meant to be 'my' poll. If the economic aspect is a valid arguement for a gamer, then so be it. It all depends on what you put into 'the golden age'. So please, have whatever reason you care for. k:

Well more games are coming out every year, more people play games, there is more to choose(you can still play the oldies) so today is objectively the best time for gaming (also hardware is much cheaper)...
Otherwise it's a subjective call :P

The real golden age of games will come in Q4 this year, when Nintendo Wii will be for sale

I entered the gaming area somewhere around 1993 with first the classic Gameboy and then Nintendo NES, but it truly began for me in 1994 with the many exciting Dos-games, shareware and full versions alike. Evethough the age of C64 games and before is very interesting too, it was before my awareness and so my golden memories are rooted in the era of Ms-Dos 5 until 6.22.
