From what I've seen at my friend's, who has installed it, it's pretty much Win7 with a new start menu that's as useless as it can get. The interesting features are under the hood, they say, and I'd like to know what is the largest partition Win8 can handle with it's new allocation table. I wouldn't use it on a daily basis though, the next one must be better.

The story is that Microsoft dropped the ball so badly in the mobile market that now they feel the need to overcompensate, and let tardpads dictate the strategies for their whole empire including PCs. I don't know Windows 8, but you probably can't understand it or Metro (I think they're going to change that name BTW) if you don't understand how badly Balmer is fixated on tardpads. Bear in mind that Apple used to be worth much less than Microsoft (their stock), but recently surpassed it. As much as this is a bubble, the CEO of Microsoft can't ignore it because stockholders hold him responsible for stock value in the long and short runs.

There was a big scare among Windows programmers because of this new policy of Balmer's:

Quote:
After an initial announcement[53] that the Express 2012 release would be restricted to creating Windows 8 Metro (design language) style applications, Microsoft responded to negative developer feedback by reversing that decision and announcing that desktop application development would also be supported.[54]
Quote:
Microsoft wants Windows developers to write Windows 8-specific, Metro-style, touch-friendly applications, and to make sure that they crank these apps out, the company has decided that Visual Studio 11 Express, the free-to-use version of its integrated development environment, can produce nothing else.

If you want to develop desktop applications—anything that runs at the command line or on the conventional Windows desktop that remains a fully supported, integral, essential part of Windows 8—you'll have two options: stick with the current Visual C++ 2010 Express and Visual C# 2010 Express products, or pay about $400-500 for Visual Studio 11 Professional. A second version, Visual Studio 11 Express for Web, will be able to produce HTML and JavaScript websites, and nothing more.
Quote:
The team building the next release of Visual Studio has responded to developer criticism and is adding support for building Windows 8 Desktop apps to VS 2012 Express.

Last month, there was quite a bit of developer outcry when Microsoft officials revealed the decision to limit Visual Studio 2012 Express -- the free, entry level version of its product -- to development of Windows 8 Metro-Style, Win RT-based apps only. "No-cost desktop software development is dead on Windows 8," wrote Ars Technica at the time of the announcement.

I saw some video of Windows 8. Judging from that and the reviews it's getting it looks like I'm sticking with Linux for a very long time. Not that I mind that...

I plan to be building a PC soon and I was thinking about putting Windows 7 on there for games and whatnot. 7 is still pretty new to me (because ya know, I really haven't touched Windows since 2010ish?)

8 is made to be like the tablet thing and I'm not that crazy about those. I'm not cool (or rich) enough to own one. So... nope.

You still can switch Win8 to 'classic mode' desktop, even as WinXp-Win7 .....
And there is already a freeware 'classic shell' for Win8, you even can set a W95 'look and feel' if you want.

Fact is: they cleaned up a lot of the program code (even if this means sometimes introducing new bugs .... )

Other fact: if you don't need the improved interconnectivity or tablet comp you can happily stay on Win7, Win8 won't add much more compy pleasure.

Today my friend asked me:
-- I like very much classic screen theme of Windows XP - Bliss (some green fields and road) and others - Paradise etc.
Is it possible to use these XP's themes in Win 7 and 8?--

Maybe some one has ideas?

TY

Wallpapers are pictures. So yes, you can use any picture as wallpaper.

Full themes can be problematic, but if you find what piece matches what piece, you can manually add in the content I bet.
