Does this sound familiar? I played it in the mid 80's. I think there was a sequel too. You flew around the solar system in a spaceship that looked kinda like a tuning fork. You could land on pretty much any planet you find and it had extremely simple 3-d graphics, maybe even faked, when you landed. you could drive around and pick stuff up and then fly off back to earth and sell it, or you could sell it to other ships you come across. Anyways, I hope you might be able to help me find this game. It was called Star Quest or something like that.

...I'm going to go for the obvious answer to every 80s space game request here and say : Star Control 2?

It's not 100% accurate to your description. The ships isn't quite tuning fork shaped, but you can land on planets and sell stuff to other ships (Melnorme). However, the lander graphics weren't 3D and this was the sequel. Star Control 1 was nothing like it for the adventure aspect, but I dug the stragety game even more (if that's possible).

Then there's always Fibs and Brags, a self proclaimed Star Control fan game. The web site is a bit broken right now so I don't know how to download it, but I'll see if they can't get that working soon. But maybe the screenshots will be enough to tell you if this is the right game.

May 2006. May 2006 was the last reply before yours David86. I'm just going out on a limb here, but confirmation is not likely to be forthcoming.

Unkwnown Forum is the right place for that request.
