and I have a brand new 25 quid sony microvault USB storage thing. It says for windows/mac.. so will I be able to get that to work on linux?
Im guessing I have to search sonys site for linux drivers..
Possibly, it depends. You might have difficulty if the windows drive(s) are in NTFS format, but FAT ones should be ok. On the other hand, I've been unable to mount my external iomega USB HDD in Debian so far (annoying, since that's where my music is kept) - those sort of devices will rarely have Linux drivers supplied by the manufacturer.

eh well...
I have debian with gnome fully working now with nice themes and pretty GIMP desktops k: so thanks everyone for guiding this idiot through that.
still a couple-a teeny widdly questions

if I plug in my LAN cable to my windows comps router (for the wireless) will this mean I wont have to turn the windows comp on everytime I connect to the net...
and it wont mount my USB stick.. it detects it but says things like it needs a file system...

and just one more thing. I want to enable users to write to the HDD so I log onto root and go into the permissions tab when you bring up the "filesystem" disk properties.

It wont let me edit the permissions as root.. just says im not allowed too when I try. The checkboxes arent greyed out or anything

and the last, but most important question OF ALL:

can I install DOSbox on linux??

but apart from that Im there. I thank you all.. a lot and.. yeah thanks

Yes, if you plug it into the router, you can leave the Windows box off.

For the USB. If automounting isn't set up, you'll likely need to go into fstab and add in a scsi device.

Examples with explaination: http://www.linux-usb.org/USB-guide/x498.html

Might want to check what group is on the device.

su
<password>
apt-get update
apt-get install dosbox

Should work provided you put in the http sources during the install. If not you'll need to add them into the sources.lst file manually.

Explanation of Apt with some sources: http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howt...-basico.en.html

A linux port of DOSBox? The Windows version is the port, pal - the development is all done on the Linux version, then stable releases are converted to Windows binaries too. The Linux version will probably run fractionally faster for most users, too.
