It has been told elsewhere, but sure... this topic could use an answer.
Leisure Suit Larry was only intended to run in three episodes, and all of them were written before LSL 1 was released. (This is why the three versions fits so well into eachother. It was the first Sierra series to have sequels already prepared before the release of the first game). Then as gamers all over had played the three Larry games, they started crying out for more. Sierra then asked Al Lowe to create another LSL game. At first Al Lowe was reluctant, because in his mind the Larry series were completed. The story was finished, why revive it? But the pressure from both gamers worldwide and Sierra finally broke him down, and he accepted... on ONE condition: He would not follow the story from the first three episodes. He wanted to have the official story of Larry Laffer on one side, and the spinoff series (LSL 5,6,7 and 8) on the other side - with no bridge between them. Because of this he called the new game LSL 5, and wiped out parts of Larry's memory (the game begins with Larry trying to figure out his past, and stating that he can't remember anything before LSL4 - The Case of the Missing Floppies). This way Larry started anew, and had nothing to do with the first three games. Al Lowe only mentioned LSL4 as a joke, he knew people would start asking around and look for a game that didn't exist. He still laughs out loud today when someone asks about LSL4. So... LSL4 doesn't exist. Never made. LSL5 is the fourth game using the Larry name, but is not connected to LSL1, 2 and 3. Hope this cleared it up

Well very interesting facts that I didn't know about LSL 4, I knew about some of the issues, but the ones that have been mentioned with the virus and such, very interesting.

Well all I can tell you is what I've read in the booklet that came along with the Collector's Larry pack... Al Love is supposed to speak in the first person and he's supposed to have siad: By the time I got around to finish another Larry game the Space Quest was already at the 5th sequel, so I wanted Larry to catch up. That's why I went straight ahead and created Larry 5.
If you want I'll scan this part of the booklet on Monday (at work - my scaner is still :ranting: ) so you can read what exactly does it say! |
