I noticed long ago, that in different games there are lot of identical sounds. For example, sound of "open door" and "close door" in Revenant is the same, as in Morrowind. I'm sure, you noticed this as well and can tell your own examples.
I was wondering, how it is done? If it is simple "rip out" from some game, do creators of the game, that uses sounds which were used in other game, break the law? Or there is some kind of open archive with sounds somewhere in Internet?

It's the same with movies. There are special effect samples that can be found all over (from that classical *boing* sound when something hits and bounces...).

Hmm....regarding this, I can swear that in a film I saw some time ago, the sound which the pedestrians in Carmageddon make when they are scared was the same sound the producers of the movie used in some action sequence. Scary....

There's a particular explosion sound effect with a sort of squeaky metallic quality to it which was used in Half-Life and I keep hearing it all over the place in TV ads, films and stuff.

I have noticed the same once or twice although I cannot recall when and where. It is only logical since creating your own sounds is both time more consuming and more expensive then simply buying them off the shelf.

P.S. Mhhh, tomatoes

I think it's the same thing as it is with pics.
They have databeses where you can buy what they offer.
So pics or sounds or whatever.
That's probably why it's always the same sounds?

I remember seeing a site awhile back that chronicled this. It also talked about the single most used sound effect in all media.

The X-Com sounds for doors, screams and interface are very common on movies (mainly sci-fi).
