FL Studio 6 (Fruityloops) is surely worth it. I use it for 3/4 years already but I find it quite hard to make orchestral music. I know someone who did make that in FL Studio and to hear what it can sound like you can find some songs of him here.

fl studio is great for working vsts. it has the edge on other stuff for running vst's actually, but as the guy says making orchestral in it would be tricky. i always think of fruity as being more of a beatbox, even though it has evolved far from that. sonar i always hear great things about. maybe go for a budget version of that. cubase is probably the most widely used so would be easier to get help with it from forums, it needs a bit of a beast of a system and soundcard to get it working well tho.

optimum sys config for cubase. (and most audio soft) (using xp)
c partition about 9 ghz, 10 ghz maximum
d partition about 10 ghz mb bit more or less
e partition remaining space.
but if you use p2p make an f partition

cubase and plugins on c
web software and o.s on d
backups, samples mp3s, games, movies ect on e (so no modern games on this system, emmys and oldschool only) on e
p2p software and incoming downloads folder on f.

actually this setup works well for any music system as it means the dischead doesnt have to scan thru loads of irrelevent data to get to what it needs. adjust partitions to the amount of audio u use in projects as audio files cubase/whatever u use/ is streaming from disc should be on c. your windows performance wont suffer anything as long as you have enuff ram, ie 512 + as xp will load into ram anyway.
