Thumbs up

Yobi's Basic Spelling Tricks (sometimes called Yobi's Magic Spelling Tricks) is a game that I have enjoyed a lot when I was little, and I have recently found the disks that it is stored on. I have the files loaded onto my computer, and it seems as though everything is fine, until I try to start the program.

:help: The intro screen appears, and I can hear the music for the game, but an error message (in a white box) appears immediately, saying there is a problem, and I can choose to "close" the program, or "ignore". Closing the program does just that, but when I choose ignore, the error message doesn't go away. If I click the ignore button a few times, another error message comes up (one of the grey-boxed ones with the "details" button) and pressing the details button gives me this message:

I have no clue what it means, so I don't know how to fix the problem... Can anyone give me some suggestions? :help:

You are trying to run it under Windows. This is the source of the problem.
Read the stickies around this part of the board and you'll quickly find out how to fix that.

Hmmm... I still don't quite understand what you mean...
The game is supposed to be played in Windows, as far as I can tell, but I'm probably overlooking something...

Are you certain about this?
Did it function under Windows before?
Which Windows version was that?
Which version are you trying to run it under now?
Have you tried reinstalling the game?
Are you sure that the floppies / CD have not been damaged?

In the order of your questions:

- Yes, I am sure. I tried (on a strange idea) to run the game using DOSBox, and a message came up stating that the game was to be run in Windows; not to mention that the disks themselves say "Windows" on them

-Yes, the game has functioned on Windows before, though not (so far) on this computer... It ran on my older computer, but it still ran on Windows

-The version that it originally ran under was 3.1, but I know that it can run on newer versions, since I can remember playing it on a '95 at my Uncle's home... (No luck getting in contact with him though :ranting: )

-I'm currently trying to run the game in '98, but I not sure if there would be a big enough difference between '95 and '98 to cause the problem (of course, I'm not really great with computers in general, so I'm probably wrong)

-I have tried reinstalling the game quite a few times now, the count definitely over 5 times, and the error is always the same, at the exact same place

-The 4 disks appear to be in extremely good condition, and my computer had no problems when loading the information off of them to set up the game... My father also had a look at them, and said they look newer than some of the blank disks that he uses at work

I've looked around on the internet to see if there were any mentions of this sort of thing before (in relation to this game), but I didn't get any hits... So I'm stuck until I can either figure out how to get the frigging thing to co-operate, or I go and find my old 3.1 and see if it works there.
*growl* Oh, that'll be fun... Searching my basement for the parts of my 3.1... :ranting:
*ahem* Sorry about that, it's just VERY frustrating to be so close to a game that I love/loved, and not be able to play it.

 You can WHAT?

I've never used DOSBox until my (ahem) bright idea to try it with this game, so I have no clue about installing into it... Hell, I didn't even know things could BE installed into it.
How the heck do I do that?

Uhm It's not for the faint-hearted.

I think you are out of luck
a general protection fault can be triggered by numerous things and all are beyond your control.

there are quite some changes between win98 and 95 but I doubt they will have effect on your game though. You could try double booting to win95 if it works there or try it on another pc with win98
