Well that's not true. It's just that in the ex-communist countries they made a really big deal out of this (because they canceled Mother's day - that's why this day replaced mother's day - what Yamcha said). But it is an international women's day (even Google changed it's sign - the second O was changed in the symbol for female.
But it's true, that mostly the native english speaking countries don't really know much about this day, although in commemorates the events that happened in the US (when women were trying to achieve labour equality and some of them got killed by the military).

Woman's day is very big here (although I didn't get to enjoy it). Actually the date that is used now is thanks to Russia mostly. During The Great War (1917), women factory workers went on strike against the government on the last Sunday of February (on the Julian calendar, changing to the Gregorian calendar it becomes March 8). This was the start of rioting all over, and days later the Tsar abdicated and a provisional government granted women voting rights.

Is the thing in the US you are talking about the factory fires in New York? That was in 1910 I think, and I think almost 200 women (girls mostly) died in them. I don't remember women being shot by the US military while protesting for labor equality rights.

Anyways, in my region, Women's day is very much a celebration of mothers, but also women soldiers (Since soldier's day is just a little bit earlier) and also something like Valentine's day (Giving flowers and gifts). A lot of Western countries don't celebrate Women's day very much. Too bad I guess.

Sorry, you're right. I'm just doing so many things at once... I actually confused the reason why the 1st of May was remembered with the reason for the 8th of March being remebered. It was the fire yes. So in that memory women were preparing strikes on the 8th of March.

Thank you for correcting me k:

YAY :Brain: for women.

One of my female freinds did a talk at some womens conference for this day and got a free breakfast, I wish I got a free breakfast I'm lucky to have any breakfast.

I do modern history at school and we did the suffragettes in britain and its disgusting the way women were treated, I'm glad it isnt like that any more. :Brain:
