I installed tie fighter to my computer and whenever I try to start a mission it freezes with a butchered version of what I should be seeing on the screen is there a way to fix that?

Do you play the game in DosBox? If not, try it there. Also if your flight resolution is set to 640x480, set it to 320x200 and see if that helps.
