Dime was the man, IMO.

I also dig Satch and Vai.

Some really cool jazz guitarists are Marc Antoine, Peter White, and Craig Chaquico.

I'd like to add a new one to my list. Jerry Garcia from Greatful Dead, having listened to "can you pass the acid test?" I have to say he is a truly talented guitarist especially the song The Eleven which is in 11/8 time. Also the Dead's concerts could go on for hours just improvising, truly awesome stuff.

I would like to add one as well. Joe Satriani is an excellent guitarist.

kurt cobain for his rythms (man learning to play an sing that stuff at the same time was tuffer than i thought it would be, fun tho) for lead i got a soft spot for santana, the way he blends styles is nice. for innovation either tom morello (ratm) or ed o brian (radiohead) when i saw the kid a tour i was amazed (by studying the vidio afterwards veeery closly) how much of the stuff i had assumed was samples was guitar also the first track on hail to the thieve is amazing, kinda sounds like elizibethan rock, man that boy knows his modes!

I respect Richard Thompson only because of his work on "vincent black lightning 1952".
Stan Rogers does some alright stuff too...
Then there are classics like, Santana, Hendrix, Keith Richards, Jimmy Page, Syd Barrett, Pete Townshend, Rhodes, Lou Reed...

yeah man, the stuff he did with the velvets was so cool, i think if there was no velvet underground there would be no sonic youth. (may not seem apparent at first, but listen to the drone of a tune like heroin and youre heading towards the youths style)
