How does one go about extracting game sprites from a game? I have seen some AMAZING animations created by people using game sprites, but I have never understood how you extract each little image so perfectly. Can anyone help? Is there a program or something I can use?

hmm well I normally try to find some graphics in the data files just by reading them out with a self-made program and trying to find the right sizes. Palette files are normally easily recognised by their size (3x256 bytes). It's mostly puzzling but I guess there are tools for some specific games.

You can extract sprites from the Sierra AGI games with AGI Studio and from SCI Games with SCI Studio. These include the Space Quest, Kings Quest, Lesiure Suit Larry etc games.

And I know there is a ripper for the old Lucasarts adventure games too, but I havn't used it before.

One of the funnest things to do with Flash is play around with old video game sprites (characters). You can search for sprites on the web, or make your own! Simply download an emulator, find a rom for the game (note: if you don't own the original copy, this is illegal!), and rip the sprites out yourself! I do this by making screen grabs and cutting out the characters in Photoshop. If there is an easier way, I'd love to know!

For Windows games, just hit "Prt Scr" (Print Screen) on your keyboard and paste it in Paint. When you're in DOS try the program "Capture by George!", I use it all the time, it works! Look at my avatar, it's from Beasts and Bumpkins. Print screen didn't work but Capture by George did the trick!

Reamus, you can have my über special zip of every sprite and room image from Loom. You can always go to the LucasHacks! to hack SCUMM scripted games.
