If your XP Copy is illegal and you go to check it using their special software, you would be given a free copy or at discounter price if you are able to tell them the place of purchase etc.

Thanx

Well, I suppose the reasoning is that if they're dumb enough to get pirated copies and pay for them, they'll also be dumb enough to tell Microsoft about it afterwards and then pay them for a legal copy.

Well, since for some time now they refuse to update your os without installing SP2, I wouldn't care anyway for their new anti piracy system. Mind you I have a legal copy, and do so since W98, but the constant big brother attitude is very annoying.

but why the hell do they offer security updates for pirated versions ??

Does that make sense ?

Or do they just want them to stop being MailBombers (and other stuff that viruses do with security gaps) ?

BTW I think it's a nice thing that they search for illegal copies that are sold as legal.

Imagine buying a PC at the dealer round the corner and he wants an extra 299 $ for your Windows Version and then gives you a damn pirated version ? Those guys must be punished !

Well, I got my copies of Windows 3.1, 98 and XP (skipped 95, thank God) with new computers that I bought - so I assume they were legal and wouldn't see any point in checking, really. I'm not Microsoft's watchdog, after all.
But are they seriously expecting that 'anti-piracy system' to work? I mean, if your version of Windows did turn out to be pirated, would you go and tell Microsoft about it? How do you know they wouldn't suspect you of deliberately buying pirated software?
