Can someone explain to me what asecension is properly? Are all characters reset to level 1? that would be a bit of a blow to all the high level characters and even me, although I'm only level 11.

It's not coded yet unless I'm mistaken. From what I gathered so far, you would restart a new class while permanently keeping a skill from the previous class.
For example as soon that ascension is imped I plan to start a Turtle Tamer anew and keep the meathsmith skill of the Seal Clubber. This should allow me to smith both weapons and armor for the clan. |

Ascension is entirely optional, you get the option when you defeat the naughty Sorceress, like Eagle said, it is still being tested by Jick and serveral game veterans. Iron_Scarecrow posted a good guide to it earlier.
