It installs fine, then when I try to launch it, it just gives me a generic windows xp error that it had to close and asks me if I want to send report or not. I put it in Windows 95 compatability also, but that did nothing. I was wondering if there is a way to get it to work without having to buy the new steam version...

Ok so I patched it, then it worked. Then I quit to go eat supper. Then I came back to play it again and it kept crashing again. Isn't that weird?

Well, it is old game, but even older games can work in XP. It is almost impossible to know why it crashes if it doesn't give any errors. Does it make any error log files to your SIN folder?
