I have installed this game to Windows 2000 Pro (SP4) and Windows XP Pro (SP2). Well, I did NOT install it for XP... at the time of installing, I got dual-booting system.

Here is how I did it.

1) At first I tried the autorun... no.
2) Then with all compatibility mode... no.
2.1.) Copied whole CD to HD and then tried with all compatibility mode... no.
3) I launched Windows Explorer and started to explore the RA CD...
3.1.) Found two interesting folders... SETUP and SETUP95...
3.2.) Figured out that SETUP95 is Windows version (no sh* Sherlock).
3.3.) Browsed to SETUP folder.
3.4.) Found two exes, SETUP and INSTALL.
3.5.) Launched SETUP.exe...
3.6.) DOS version of SETUP started...
3.7.) Did not found CD, so I swapped the CD to PRIMARY CD drive.
3.8.) Retried and SETUP started!

4) I did not choose any sound card in fear it crashes.
4.1) SETUP suggested C:\WESTWOOD\REDALERT, accepted and install started.
4.2.) Success.
4.3.) Browsed to C:\WESTWOOD\REDALERT and used RASETUP. 640x480,Backbuffer,Allow hardware filled bits.

5) Right-click and compatibility tab.
5.1) Choosed Windows 98 / ME and checked ALL compatibility checks.
5.2) Started and ... it worked!

And for Windows XP, I just created shortcut for RA95.exe and applied same compatiblity modes.

Hi
I'm still having problems with red alert. Ive got windows xp. I've used windows compatibilty on it an the cd. I've also downloaded and installed patch update version 1.08 english. This made the single player mode and skirmish work perfectly. I'm haveing trouble sorting out a lan connection. Can anyone tell me how to do it. I know red alert uses the IPX protecol and I think I've installed it onto my lan card but red alert still doesn't show me the network options menu so if I have installed everything properly it must not be detecting the IPX protecol.

Any ideas? How have you got it to work

Well, hello first...
I have a problem with RA and WinXP

While all others have problem running RA, I get a problem every time I try to install it. An error message appears:

It's in Greek (i have the greek version of Windows XP) and it means

"16 bit Windows sub-system

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. This system file is not apropriate for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Click "Close" to terminate this application.

<Close> <Ignore>"
(I hope the translation is accurate)
If I click ignore, the error window dissapears and nothing happens.

The problem is, I already changed the setup.exe to compatibility mode Windows 95 and I don't know why it keeps showing this.

Please HELP!
Download this file and unrar it in your windows\system32 folder. That fixes the problem.

See, the problem is actually that the AUTOEXEC.NT went missing for some reason. You need that file to start DOS and Win95/98 applications.

The archive also contains CONFIG.NT, since that's the second DOS config file, which also seems to have the nasty habit of disappearing.

Hey its me again. sry but the game doesnt want to install. It keeps sayin "Unable to locate neccesary files. Please run Setup.exe from the disc". Ive copid autoexc and config.nt from that download u posted, even when it didnt tell me anything about autoexec.nt, but it still doesnt want to install. And ive tried DOS setup, but it says "Unable to locate Setup.mix, please insert the cd and retry". Ive also tried that post talking about the dos install but it doesnt work (i still get the setup.mix error). OMG, NOW im about to get desperate
