In any event, I was wondering if anyone knew about a glitch where the tree that is supposed to yield a Red Acorn for Ruddyoak doesn't respond to the perception command.

Yes, Interplay even used to mention it on their web site. What they forgot to mention though is that the game tends to screw things up by moving you a few steps too many, so that your one chance to get the acorn is lost. Solution: walk up to the tree very carefully, step by step. When you trigger the message about seeing a red acorn, DO NOT MOVE. Now get the acorn. Works for me.

That's odd. I'm moving very, very slowly -- using single taps of the keyboard key to make sure I don't go too fast. Problem is, when the acorn message appears, I can visibly see the sprite move regardless of what I do. Might there be a way to slow down the emulator enough to prevent this from happening?

Do you know where to get the Springstone? It's on a hill roughly to the west of the pool where the lillies are dead. If you approach it wrong, you'll have to fight the Black Alder -- a VERY formidable foe -- but I've found that if you come from straight south, dig with the shovel on top of the hill, and leave quickly, you can get around the red acorn glitch and get the stat bumps from Goldberry anyway.

You're in the rare position of being able to play it from scratch however. I love games like that, the first day you hate the game because you're hopeless and going nowhere, the second day you start to get the hang of it and get hooked, the third day you start making real headway... The only problem with games like lotr is the massive temptation to look at walkthrus.

I don't remember the exact location of the cloaks, but Gimli is in a secret passage that you need to find.

I agree with you "Nobody"...playing a new game from scratch without any help from the Hints or Walkthroughs - and definitely never using a Cheat...is fun though a little frustrating when you get stuck. But then trying again and getting the 'hang' of it. That's gaming .

If you've found 8 cloaks you've found all of them.

Actually there is an unused string in the game, saying that you found a cloak on a rock in the river somewhere--the 9th cloak most probably. But there is no way to find it, this was never implemented.

Gimli is in Rivendell ...
