In my opinion it's Joe Satriani. I prefer him to Yngwie Malmsteen who's really talented but can't get the hang of making songs which are more than just extended arpeggios and scales.
So who do you think is the greatest guitarist ever?

Well if you really wanna know my opinion - I'd have to say Paul Simon, but then again, it's only a metter of taste so I guess not many will agree...
There's also Jimmy Hendrix... Not to mention Carlos Santana...

Yeah they are really ace. Eruption by Van Halen is just completely amazing despite not being very songy. My long term ambition is to learn it. I got about 30 seconds of it sorted in..... 4 months Slash is pretty ace, not the best but definitely cool, who else would make the connection between top hats and rock n roll?

Eruption is a masterpiece of guitar playing... you can see many of the eddie's techniques in this track as the well known "tapping"

I really like Slash because his work with the guitar gave identity to the guns n roses songs... his guitar solos aren't that impressive but you can enjoy them so much!!! k:

Yeah, I see what you mean about slash, he's not as technically good as other players but without him we would never have heard sweet child of mine or welcome to the jungle which are extremely cool songs.

And on the tapping front. That's the bit I can play in eruption and do play whenever someone asks if I can play guitar

Well, if you like Plant that much, you should know that he isn't a guitarist, he is a singer(vocalist)!
But I must agree that he is a true legend and has a great voice! However, since we are posting about guitarist here, i should say Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) is the best for me, followed by Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple), Mick Box (Uriah Heep) and Angus Young (AC/DC)! True legends, all of them!
