Well as much as I picked up from the net so far, dual-slot graphic cards offer slightly better performance with applications / games, if it is supported, and some are already supporting it. But as Fifth already mentioned, many games (and maybe applications) don not support 2x so there might and will be compatibility problems.

It is an easier solution to get a stronger single graphics card, but in the end it depends on what you mainly intend to use on your computer.

How is Acer?
Right now I'm thinking about the following machine:
Click 'uitklappen' under 'specificaties'
Add one of those Ageia thingies, and detract about 200 from the price

I can then make a seperate XP install and add a DVD-R. Perhaps I'll also add a sound card, if the integrated sound doesn't satisfy.

'No' by principle, or 'no' by practice? :cheesy:

both=P you are gonna get
1. premade sets instead of the advantage of free choice and picking anything you want, so it'd fit your shoes size

2. it's, of course, more expensive..

3. using thermal glue on CPU is fun!

Fair enough, although '1' is kind of the point

Here's a custom build that I could use some feedback on. And I could really use some help choosing a motherboard

Case: Antec Sonata III Silence
PSU: Antec EarthWatts EA500
Motherboard: ?
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
-Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper TX2
RAM 1: Kingston ValueRAM 1GB 800MHz DDR2 Non-ECC CL5
RAM 2: Kingston ValueRAM 2GB, 800MHz, DDR2, Non-ECC, CL5, DIMM 240-pin
HD1: Western Digital Caviar RE500Gb (SataII)
-Cooler: Nexus Silent HDD brackets
HD2: Western Digital Caviar RE500Gb (SataII)
-Cooler: Nexus Silent HDD brackets
Videocard: Asus EN8800GT 512Mb
Soundcard: Creative Soundblaster X-fi Xtreme Gamer
DVD1: Samsung SH-D162C DVD-ROM 16X
DVD2: NEC AD7191 DVD-rewriter 20X LS IDE
Cardreader: ?

OS: MS Windows XP home

TFT: Acer P203Wd
Keyboard: Logitech Media Keyboard 600
Mouse: MS Basic Optical (black)*
Speakers: Creative Inspire 265

*I actually need a trackball. I've used an old MS IntelliMouse Trackball, but I can't find a good complete one to replace it. Tight market.

Do you intend to connect those two 500GB drives in RAID-1 or use them individually?

I'd never use a drive that large to install my OS and other software on. The sheer number of read-write operations wear them down faster than ones "just" used to store data.

LightScribe DVD recorder... do you actually intend to use LightScribe? If not, Consider picking a recorder without it.

RAID-1?
If I understand correctly, and you're talking about using them as one would a 1Tb HD, then I'm I intend to use them seperately :wondering:

As for the DVD rewriter (and DVD player): not really. Is there a catch attached? Hmm, I guess I can save a few Euros by getting a Lite-On DH-20A4P-21C DVD Rewriter 20X IDE instead.

But do you have suggestions for the motherboard? Or what I should pay attention to? :wondering:

first of all, don't pick the cheapest one.

well, you it needs to be DDR2 compatible motherboard for your rams (but it'd be actually odd if you found one without it in these days)

then, you need to pay attention to socket, so it's the same as on your processor. in case of your, it will probably be 775, but don't forget to check!
as for the brand, i had 2 MSIs, one ASUS and had no problems so far

oh, and about the cardreader brand, it matters as much as weather in uganda

btw i meant, that the premade sets are more expensive, not the ones that you build for yourself

Hmm, the Asus P5K Pro seems to deliver at a low price tag. The pc I'm typing from has a (much) older card from the AI line, and it has always satisfied.

That would make the end result:
Code:

Case: Antec Sonata III Silence
PSU: Antec EarthWatts EA500
Motherboard: Asus P5K Pro
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500
-Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper TX2
RAM 1: Kingston ValueRAM 1GB 800MHz DDR2 Non-ECC CL5
RAM 2: Kingston ValueRAM 2GB, 800MHz, DDR2, Non-ECC, CL5, DIMM 240-pin
HD1: Western Digital Caviar RE500Gb (SataII)
-Cooler: Nexus Silent HDD brackets
HD2: Western Digital Caviar RE500Gb (SataII)
-Cooler: Nexus Silent HDD brackets
Videocard: Asus EN8800GT 512Mb
Soundcard: Creative Soundblaster X-fi Xtreme Gamer
DVD1: Samsung SH-D162C DVD-ROM 16X
DVD2: Lite-On DH-20A4P-21C DVD Rewriter 20X IDE
Some kind of Cardreader

OS: MS Windows XP home

TFT: Acer P203Wd
Keyboard: Logitech Media Keyboard 600
Mouse: MS Basic Optical (black)
Speakers: Creative Inspire 280
Any more feedback on such a system? Would it work and, more importantly, would it perform?
I have several other questions too; would it perhaps be a better idea to go with a Quad Core setup? And how about a physics card?

Edit: And would a 1Gb 8800GT be an idea?
Edit 2: Changed speakers and processor. Is the E8500 be a better choice then the E8400?

By the way, I'm probably going to have it assembled anyway. I'm low on time during most of May, but I can't manage without a PC during that time.
