Its wierder than that. Not all anime goes for androgynous character design. The wierd bit is that any character of unspecified race is, in fact, ethnically japanese, despite the complete absence of any racial feature that distinguishes them from a northern european. The anime series that really lets this convention confuse the issue is Master Keaton. Only by paying due attention to the story can you figure out which character drawn as a european isn't japanese. Keaton is a british subject of mixed japanese and english parentage. If you just watched promo clips, you would assume that his unseen mother is the japanese parent, as his father does not look out of place in a british pub.

In tongue-in-cheek mangas Europeans are easy to recognize: all blonde and carry a rose all the time and smell it. No seriously, I think this blunt characterization of personae by means of a couple of easily recognizable conventional traits, may derive from traditional kabuki in the end.

Anyway, I don't watch anime or read manga or whateverz. But I do play some Japanese GAMS and I can already say that Solid Snake and his counterpart Crusty Cake are both manly anime dudes. (They have little graphic novel thangs in the manuals)
