Shivers made me jump a few times. If you got too close to an object when the spooky music was playing, a deamon would jump out and grab you...

Well, for me it's Silent Hill series, and F.E.A.R.

Oh, and Agatha Christie's: And Then There Were None isn't scary in true meaning of the word, but has a certain spooky atmosphere.

That reminds me....

Anyone of you ever played "I have no Mouth and I must Scream"?

It wasn't really scary, but it had a really, really, really, really moody atmosphere. One of the weirdest (and not in a negative way) games I ever played.
Imagine SHODAN becoming male and actually succeed in the whole reality bending thing. You get the idea.

I love the book and film/s .. and I loved that old Amiga game 'clue' which I believe is a similar concept

This is another game I really want to get

I think that the only time I was truly scared was while playing Silent Hill 2.

/me can't wait for the movie to come out

EDIT:

I did, it's from the same company that created DarkSeed. I think it's a funny and creepy game, but only if you don't mind all the bugs the game has, and some of the (very obscure) puzzles.

In the same line, I recommend Sanitarium. A really, really great game.
